When the Velvets announced plans for a reunion tour in Europe, opening for U2 on select dates there, expectations of a US tour rose to a fever pitch. Tragically, the Velvets broke up again before reaching the States, and shortly afterwards guitarist Sterling Morrison succumbed to cancer, leaving the clamoring fans with only Live MCMXCIII to console themselves. It contains not only brilliantly extended versions of classics like Femme Fatale, Pale Blue Eyes and Heroin, but also its share of ultraobsure numbers such as the bombastic Hey Mr. Rain and drummer Moe Tucker's sweetly innocent singing on I'm Sticking With You. The first-ever group approved live recording by the original group, Velvet Redux brings Lou Reed, John Cale, Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison together on stage for the first time in 25 years. The video captures the Velvets playing powerful renditions of originals including "Heroin," "Femme Fatale," "Pale Blue Eyes" and "Sweet Jane," as well as a new song, "Coyote." The Velvet Underground: Lou Reed (guitar, vocals), Sterling Morrison (guitar, bass), John Cale (bass, keyboards, viola, vocals), Maureen Tucker (drums, vocals).

Glad they reunited I'm glad they got back together and it was filmed. It's a great concert performance. No smoke bombs or stage prancing. Just great musicians doing what they do. If you love V.U. then you must have this. Submitted by jamie.1968 (Athens , GA U.S.A.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
VU Appreciation 101 It was often said that the only way to fully understand the devotion many had to the Velvet Underground was to see them live. Like many bands at the time, the studio recordings didn’t quite capture who and what the band was. They were another side of 60’s/70’s social phenomenon. A harder, edgy, alternate side of life compared to the free love hippie mind set. While most popular bands at the time centered on the Haight/Ashbury San Francisco scene, VU was NY. While Hendrix sang about Foxy Lady, VU sang about transsexuals, addicts, bondage and street life.
This concert 20 years later captures the music component of the band only. The sub context and aura are missing from the songs. Partly due to the amount of time that has passed, diluting the impact. Partly due to song selection. If Sister Ray had been included it would have seemed out of place.
This isn’t really a Lou Reed centered film as some have complained; he sang most of the VU material. John, Sterling and Mo are equally visible.
This is a must have DVD for those fans of the Velvet Underground. It is what you would have seen if you had caught them at the Boston Tea Party with this pre-Doug line up. Turn it up as loud as you can to get an idea of what it was like to see them live.

Velvet Underground, The - Velvet Redux Mcmxciii movie DVD
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A ...

Velvet Underground, The - Velvet Redux Mcmxciii film
$7.09 Focusing on the failed relationship of a thirtysomething couple, French director Francois Ozon (SWIMMING POOL, UNDER THE SAND) organizes this film into five chapters they shared together. In backwards chronology, the first chapter of Marion (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi) and Gilles's (Stephane Freiss) story has them signing divorce papers, and the last chapter shows the first sparks of romance between them years earlier. A master of controlling his audience's emotions, Ozon elicits vast sympathies for each character, making their relationship--and especially, the problems they cannot live with--more painful with each new detail revealed about Marion and Gilles. We see them alone in their darkest moments as they sit staring into space, smouldering with bitter helplessness at how the relationship is irreversibly wrong. And we see them love, and spar, and hurt each other in ways that seem unimaginable until the full picture is painted. It is this hurt that makes Marion, with her big, defeated, glassy blue eyes, unable to look at Gilles as they review the terms of their divorce. And it is this same hurt that culminates in Gilles raping Marion ...
