Critics may laud They Might Be Giants' knack for ingenious pop hooks and nimble, brainy wordplay (and those things are certainly true), but another aspect of their appeal is that their music is so fun and goofy it can make the listener feel like a kid. It is no surprise then that Giants John Flansburgh and John Linnell are naturals at making recordings for children (see their excellent release NO!). HERE COME THE ABCS, released on Disney's label, bears all the giddy hallmarks of TMBG's best work.

As the title intimates, HERE COME THE ABCS is about the alphabet. The album-length conceit spins the 26 letters through the Johns' wacky imagination, anthropomorphizing them ("E Eats Everything"), using them to illustrate geography ("Alphabet of Nations"), and even pitting them against each other ("D & W"). As usual with the Giants, there are games galore ("Can You Find It?"), interesting philosophical questions ("Who Put the Alphabet in Alphabetical Order?"), and a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including Beatlesque psych-pop ("Pictures of Pandas Painting"), twangy country ("Fake-Believe"), and funky indie-rock (the aforementioned "E Eats Everything"). HERE COME THE ABCS is ingenious, weird, silly, and great fun for playful kids and adults.

They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh, John Linnell.

Additional personnel: Marty Beller (vocals, drums); Robin "Goldie" Goldwasser, Henry Linelli, Desi Tomaselli (vocals); Dan Miller (guitar); Mark "Loveman" Pender (trumpet); Dan Levine (trombone, tuba); Patrick Dillett (keyboards); Danny Weinkauf (bass guitar).

They Might Be Giants's first children's album, NO!, is remarkably similar to their albums for adults. Characterized by irrepressibly catchy melodies, witty lyrics, and an overall sense of irreverent playfulness, NO! is business-as-usual for the dynamic duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, and fits perfectly within their discography. In fact, in inventiveness, songwriting, and pure crazy pleasure, NO! may be the best Giants album since FLOOD. Musically, the Giants are all over the map here with funky grooves ("Clap Your Hands"), wistful lullabies ("Sleepwalkers") and avant experimentalism ("Violin"). While whimsy is a given for Flansburgh and Linnell, there is a sense that they've tailored their songwriting for a younger set on this release. "In the Middle, In the ...

Disney Princess The Ultimate Song Collection is one of the better ideas for a Disney compilation: it's a collection of most of the memorable songs sung by the princesses in films spanning Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to Pocahontas and Mulan. The album opens with "If You Can Dream," a new song featuring all of the vocal talents behind the princesses in the later Disney movies. Like most diva collaborations, it's less than the sum of its parts, with bland songwriting detracting from the performances of Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid's Ariel), Lea Salonga (Aladdin's Jasmine and Mulan), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas), and Paige O'Hara (Beauty and the ...

Since 1996's BEAUTIFUL FREAK, Mark Oliver Everett used his band, Eels, as a mouthpiece for his inspirationally morose worldview. Recorded over a period of seven years in Everett's basement, the 33 tracks of 2005's BLINKING LIGHTS AND OTHER REVELATIONS see the singer/songwriter backing off from the rockier sounds of 2003's SHOOTENANNY! to meditate on the significance of family, ...

Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks CD  (1996)

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK! ROCKS finds Pavement, Better Than Ezra, Deluxx Folk Implosion (featuring Sebadoh's Lou Barlow) and Moby, among others, covering songs from "Schoolhouse Rock," the Emmy Award-winning educational cartoon series that aired Saturday mornings on ABC from 1973 to 1995 (it was brought back in the '90s for the enlightenment of a new generation of cartoon watchers). Barlow sings "I'm Just A Bill," interpreting the spoken voice of a congressional bill as an understandably whiny thing. The song paints a convincing, matter-of-fact picture of the complications faced by potential laws: "I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill/And if they vote for me on Capitol Hill/Well, then I'm off to the White House where I'll wait in a line." Another standout is Blind Melon's cover of "Three Is A Magic Number." A laid-back, James Brownish psychedelic groove, combined with Shannon Hoon's squeaky-clean vocals, is sure to get the kids in the basement dancing. Sing the phrase "I'm just a Bill, yes I'm only a Bill" to any American between the ages of 25 and 40 and they'll answer "and I'm sittin' here on Capitol Hill" without thinking twice. "I'm Just a Bill" was only one of dozens of School House Rock! animated videos that ran on ABC Saturday morning TV throughout the '70s. Following the lead of Sesame Street, the shorts, sandwiched between cartoon and commercials, combined catchy tunes, cartoons, and educational messages. The shows have enjoyed a resurgence in the '90s with their re-airing on ABC (along with some new sequences) as well as the decade's '70s nostalgia. More than the messages or the videos, School House Rock! is remembered for its songs. These super-hummable full-length jingles have a permanent place in collective memories of the '70s, so it seems appropriate that the program's owners have brought together a collection of young bands to cover the songs, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Children's Defense Fund. The 15 songs on this initial offering only represent a portion of the total set, but it is a collection of the most memorable ditties. Beyond the undeniably delicious nostalgia trip, the compilation shows the surprising songcraft of the original tunes. The fabulous "Interplanet Janet" performed by Man or Astroman? could easily be mistaken for a proto-punk space saga. Matching the songs with today's reigning alt-pop darlings like Better Than Ezra, Ween, Buffalo Tom, and the Lemonheads is a logical progression, continuing the tradition of melody-centered pop carried by earnestly pretty singing. There are also some great surprises. Biz Markie turns in a stride piano ...
