| | Charlotte Church Dream A Dream CD (2000)
Russian String Quartets
$6.09 The little girl with the big voice is back for a selection of popular Christmas songs and carols, ranging from the medieval "Coventry Carol" to the brand new title track, whose chorus will be recognized by classical music fans as the "Pavan" of Gabriel Faure. In between are pop standards like "Winter Wonderland" and Mel Torme's "Christmas Song" as well as some less familiar fare such as the delicate calypso "Mary's Boy Child" and the Welsh "Draw Tua Bethlehem". Much of the program features big, lush orechestral arrangements with Church's voice at full throttle, but several tracks deliver less most effectively, such as the lovely, simple choral accompaniment to Michael Praetorius' "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" or the opening verse of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," sung solo with no instruments at all.
Charlotte Church In The Holy Land
Recorded at Blackheath Concert Halls and Air Studios, London, England.

$10.15 Tangos is a decent look at the genre, though not an exceptional or definitive one; there are, of course, tracks by the greatest tango musician of all time, Astor Piazzolla, as well as selections by Orquesta Tipica, Carlos Gardel, Andras Adorjan, and Horacio Salfan, to name a few. ~ Steve Huey
| | Triumphant CDs (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
Russian String Quartets
$13.15 When the young reggae artist Gyptian scored a major hit with his song "Mama," producer Kemar "DJ Flava" McGregor knew that he'd better strike while the iron was hot. So he enlisted an impressive roster of A-list reggae singers and DJs to bring their own interpretations to bear on the same rhythm. "Triumphant" is an unusually soft and traditional reggae rhythm, with a one-drop flavor and gentle, almost gospel-inflected feel that seems to bring out the thoughtful side of the artists featured here (and which may explain the absence of the usually ubiquitous, but militantly slack, Vybz Kartel). While that effect has led to a certain amount of sameyness in the program, it has also brought out the best in several participants, including Anthony B, whose hard-edged singjay style contrasts nicely with the softness of the rhythm, and the incredibly sweet-voiced Mr. Easy. Luciano is here, and is a natural fit for this sound, but doesn't seem to have his heart completely in it -- though it's a tribute to his natural talent that even when he's phoning it in, he tends to stand head and shoulders above the others. There's also a very fine singer-DJ combination track featuring Ghost and Roundhead. Only Perfect's overwrought and rather goofy "Shoulda Neva" truly disappoints. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

$13.15 I've been performing these works for many years at weddings and other special events. These beautiful melodies always bring a measure of sophistication and elegance. Played on a classical guitar, these arrangements are warm and intimate. One guest at an event remarked, "The setting is wonderful, the food is awesome, but the music makes it all seem civilized".
