On its 2005 debut, the Chicago-based emo-rock ensemble known as The Academy Is... unleashes surging punk-pop anthems (most notably "Attention" and "Checkmarks") that rely on melody more than angsty bombast. With fierce guitar lines, precise rhythms, and frontman William Beckett's plaintive (but not overwrought) vocals, this group makes the kind of music that gives the sometimes-maligned emo subgenre a good name.

Since the early 2000s, what's now known as post-hardcore has been consistently codified into something eminently marketable. Screaming bloody murder over churning angular guitars has suddenly salable qualities, as long as the rage is offset by whimpering pianos and heart-flailing harmonies. This systemization isn't necessarily bad, as the groups it affects often make very arresting music. But that doesn't mean the formula itself isn't questionable. In 2004 From First to Last unleashes its first full-length via Epitaph, after debuting with an EP for the tiny New York imprint Four Leaf. And it has the right idea, using dense lyricism and inventively propulsive drumming to separate Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount from the teeming post-hardcore pack. In the liner notes preceding the lyrics to the title track of Anberlin's NEVER TAKE FRIENDSHIP PERSONAL, chief songwriter/lead vocalist Stephen Christian muses "you told me to 'write a song about it' so here's your song." That comment pretty well sums up this Florida outfit, a fiery rock quintet that lives earnestly inside of its songs. Similar to Jimmy Eat World, Anberlin is able to strike a balance between cerebral lyrics and universal observations, between artful compositions and hooky guitar riffs.
