Imperial's debut EP finds them offering a sound that isn't exactly original -- heavy but occasionally beautiful guitars, nimble and unexpected rhythmic changeups, lots and lots of hoarse screaming with an occasional descent into full-on Cookie Monster belching -- but is certainly fully developed and well constructed. The problem is, first of all, that it's getting harder and harder to listen to this kind of band without thinking about how utterly dated they're going to sound within about five or ten years, and second of all, the lyrics are beyond banal. "Your heart is black/So rest your head/Because tomorrow/We'll be your death" is one typically cringe-and-giggle-inducing passage; "We will steal your smile/No more lies" is another. (Song titles like "Washed Upon a Nameless Shore" and "In Ashes I Leave" can be considered fair warning.) Luckily, the lyrics are completely incomprehensible throughout the album, so you're free to just wallow in the undifferentiated, yowling noise and admire those nimbly crunching guitars. For faithful scenesters only. ~ Rick Anderson

$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. $13.15 More proof that Weird America is thriving comes from Castanets' Asthmatic Kitty debut, Cathedral, an album that earns its title through its expansive sound and spiritual searching. | | Michael Pickett Conversation With The Blues CD (2000)
This Grave Is My Poem music CDs
$10.55 If one is searching for some tight, well-presented blues music by an artist who has experience and talent, Michael Pickett's, Conversation With the Blues is the album to pick up. Pickett presents blues music with the finesse and charisma which comes from years of study and soulful admiration of what the genre is all about. Blues music is a genre of music which contains a small percentage of composition and a large portion of emotional improvisational expression. Michael Pickett pours himself, body and soul, into each tune on the album, sending the listener on a unique refreshing journey within his conversation with the blues. Each tune on the album, with the exception of one that is a solo effort from Pickett, finds Pickett's expressive and melodic vocals and mind-blowing harmonica complimented by Shawn Kellerman's extensive blues guitar work. "Junk Thang," a blues instrumental done in the key of E, is sure to hook many a blues fan to Pickett's magnetic harmonica playing. Shawn Kellerman and Teddy Leonard shine ...
| | Dusty Wright Elevened CD (2004)
This Grave Is My Poem songs
$11.15 New York country-rock songwriter Dusty Wright has turned the amplifiers up on Elevened, his third solo outing after a virtual career playing in bands of varying degrees of total obscurity. No Depression and other media outlets have hailed Wright as a worthy successor to the original outlaw movement for his previous two outings. Thankfully, that hype has been minor. The guy can write, and he can sing, and most of all, he can rock. Elevened has plenty of country music in its veins and on its front porch -- the restless waltz "Cuts Like a Blade" comes immediately to mind -- but the raw, blazing electric guitars on "Dusty Road" and "Cherry Red Mustang" move the set to the left musically. But it's the swampy blues overdrive of "Farmer's Daughter" that puts everything into perspective. Here is where the Cramps, the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy, and the Red Devils all commingle on some unholy tavern's stage with rotgut and cheap cigarettes for nourishment. Wright can pen the sweet sad ones as well, as evidenced by "Watching Angels Cry," or turn all cinematic and, well, dusty on "The Devil's Handmaid." But the voodoo stroll on "Dead End" or the teen garage rockabilly rave-up on "Love Saves the Day" are the real treasures here. The too-reverent Texas country read of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" doesn't cut it, but thankfully it's at the end of the disk. The faithful country stuff that Wright does is capable and worthy, but when he ...
