2005 remastered reissue of 1978 and 2nd album from The Boomtown Rats featuring frontman Bob Geldof. Contains 4 bonus tracks 'Neon Heart' (John Peel Session), 'Do The Rat' (B-side), 'Dunloaghaire' (B-side) & 'Rat Trap' (live in Stoke). Mercury.
A TONIC FOR THE TROOPS, the Boomtown Rats' second album, finds the Irish group furthering their mix of punk energy and pop hooks. While "Like Clockwork" and "Living on an Island" recall XTC in both their angular attack and quirky delivery, "She's So Modern" is an intentionally brash, straight-ahead rock tune. Other songs, however, allow frontman Bob Geldof to hone his lyrical talents, particularly the wry, incisive Nazi narrative "I Never Loved Eva Braun," "Me & Howard Hughes," a nod to eccentrics everywhere, and the street anthem "Rat Trap," which unabashedly channels Springsteen. Like many of their peers (Elvis Costello & the Attractions, the Clash, etc.), the Boomtown Rats were intent on channeling punk's momentum into different styles and more sophisticated song structures, and although the ensemble never achieved widespread success in the US, the record produced several hit singles in the UK, including the latter tune. And its finest, A TONIC FOR THE TROOPS is a prime example of punk rock's restlessly inventive spirit and its often overlooked "pop" power.
Boomtown Rats: Bob Geldof (vocals); Gerry Cott, Garry Roberts (guitar); Johnnie Fingers (keyboards); Pete Briquette (bass guitar); Simon Crowe (drums).
Uncut (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[B]oasting Geldof's most finely tuned lyrics and their best tunes." Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Full of smart, acerbic, punky pop sounds..." Tonic For The Troops Music Boomtown Rats Tonic For The Troops Songs | 1. | Like Clockwork | $0.99 | |

Tonic For The Troops CD music
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You ...

On the evidence of this highlights disc alone, no expense was spared during Barbra Streisand's 1994 nation-wide tour: full-dress Broadway set, large-scale orchestra lushly arranged and conducted by Marvin Hamlisch, a giant screen projection of Marlon Brando singing(!) a duet with Barbra from GUYS AND DOLLS. Which makes ...

Tonic For The Troops CD music
$12.49 Despite the omission of Charles "Cow Cow" Davenport and Meade "Lux" Lewis, this 22-track celebration of The Boogie Woogie does present an accurate and convincing overview of the eight-beats-to-the-bar craze that took hold of popular dance music before, during and after the Second World War (1937-1947). Like most developments in jazz and much of popular music in the United States of America, the Boogie Woogie trend was deeply rooted in working class Afro-American culture; the style itself is known to have been developed by pianists providing entertainment for black workers who lived and labored in ...
