Only the most extreme Queen fanatic will be able to keep track of all the different regional compilations that have been released over the years. And the list keeps on growing, as 2005 saw a new Japanese compilation, Jewels, Vol. 2. By this point, just about every Queen fan will have been long familiar with either the Greatest Hits or Classic Queen packages which, when coupled together, do a pretty fine job of covering the bases. But of course a few gems always manage to slip though the cracks. So -- does this mean that Jewels, Vol. 2 is the compilation that finally includes such overlooked tracks as "Liar," "White Queen," "Spread Your Wings," "The Hero," and "Calling All Girls"? The answer is disappointingly no. Once more, Jewels, Vol. 2 is a compilation comprised mostly of the same old tracks -- "Now I'm Here," "Bicycle Race," "Tie Your Mother Down" -- with really just one oddity mixed in ("Teo Torriatte"). Quite a few latter-day tracks are spotlighted as well -- "I Want It All," "These Are the Days of Our Lives," "Hammer to Fall" -- but these have been "compiled" before. One day, hopefully, somebody at Queen's label will put on their thinking cap, and put together a collection of tracks that have not turned up elsewhere several times already. The music here gets an A+; the lazy track list selection gets a C. ~ Greg Prato

Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. ...

Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Fade into Light is a stellar album. It features unplugged and redone performances from Scaggs' classic Some Change, Silk Degrees, and Middle Man, as well as some new tunes. The unplugged tunes include readings of "Dirty Lowdown" and "Simone." "Harbor Lights" is changed significantly as well, in that the disco riff in its ending has been replaced by smooth jazz. "Sierra" is a remarkable redo that gives the tune a completely different feel. "Just Go" has Scaggs playing almost everything on the track, and it is one of his most nakedly emotional performances committed to tape.
