SCISSOR SISTERS is a case study in albums that are more than the sum of their parts. On paper, the group's combination of 1970s glam, disco, and pop brings to mind Elton John, Supertramp, and a really sweaty night at the disco with a particularly deft DJ on the turntables. In practice, however, the band uses their influences not so much to create a new style as to render up something eerily familiar that isn't quite identifiable. And while the sense of the familiar makes them immediately appealing, it is the unidentified other that keeps you listening.
A trio of dance-floor stompers opens the album, all thunderous bass lines, falsetto vocals, and wah-wah guitar straight out of SUPERFLY, but that's only the beginning. "T*ts on the Radio," is a snarling, swaggering attack on conservatism, recorded before the Janet Jackson/Superbowl debacle, but more relevant since that time. "Better Luck" highlights a gloriously thumping honky-tonk beat. And the closing tracks, both of which use sweeping ambient electronics, end the album on that majestic crash everyone experiences once they leave the heightened reality of a nightclub and return to the drab city streets.

Scissor Sisters album
$15.69 Blake Edwards tones down the broadly farcical style that is his signature with this sly musical comedy starring Julie Andrews as British entertainer Victoria Grant. She and an older friend, gay impresario Toddy (Robert Preston), are close to starvation in 1930s Paris. Desperate for work, he changes her image, introducing her to the cabaret ...
| | Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads CDs (1982) Bonus Tracks
Scissor Sisters CD music
$19.19 This live album was originally released as a double LP in 1982, when the Talking Heads were still extremely active. Twenty-two years later, the bonus-laden, two-CD reissue serves as a fascinating in-concert document of the phases the band went through during its first five years. The late-'70s tracks on the first disc show the early version of the band in all its geeky glory, mixing spastic New Wave quirkiness, funk rhythms, and art-school lyrics. It's intriguing to hear the difference between some of the songs' inception and their eventual recorded versions, such as ...

| | Jay-Z Blueprint 3 CD (2009)
Scissor Sisters album
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the ...

Recorded between 1973 and 1981. Includes liner notes by Mark Coleman.
Columbia's 1998 collection of Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits in many ways stands as the group's definitive compilation. Even though there have been more extensive overviews of the group's work, such as the triple-disc set The Eternal Dance, this is the first collection to contain all of the group's biggest hits on one disc. All but one ("Love ...
| | Plasmatics Coup D'Etat CD (1982) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; United Kingdom
Scissor Sisters music CDs
$20.99 This heavy metal punk album was originally released in 1982 and introduced in-your-face lead singer Wendy O. Williams to a generation of young women looking for a non-traditional female role model.
This is as extreme and outrageous as rock got back in the early '80s--the Plasmatics, after all, introduced the mohawk haircut into rock and the general culture. But in retrospect COUP D'ETAT is far more conventional than anybody could have suspected.
The songs are very much in the vein of Alice Cooper in his commercial prime. They consist of sloganeering lyrics mated to catchy tunes, with easily identifiable choruses. The musicianship is much better than it needs to be, with legendary geek guitarist Richie Stotts performing a pretty good Ritchie Blackmore imitation. Besides possessing a growl that Marilyn Manson only wishes he could muster, it turns out that front-person Wendy O. Williams could actually carry a tune. Radical, indeed.
The early '80s were cruel to the Plasmatics, who had no trouble drawing attention to their brain-battering brand of punk metal, and their eagerness to push the on-stage gross-out envelope (including demolitions of police cars, TV sets, and other large appliances). Supporting established metal acts like Kiss attracted curiosity, but record sales stayed spotty, leading to the band's demise. But Coup d'Etat hardly signals a band teetering on its last legs, sounding as fiercely uncompromising as its predecessors. The difference is Dieter Dierks' production, which more firmly than ever positions the band in the metal orbit. (Dierks is best-known for his work with the Scorpions.) There's even a fine cover of Motörhead's "No Class," which sounds tailor-made for the band's punchy thrash attack, powered by Wendy O. Williams' harsh, masculine-sounding vocals. The group's musicianship has also evolved; this is hardly the club-footed bunch who debuted on 1980s New Hope for the Wretched (particularly Richie Stotts and Wes Beech, who've become a taut guitar team). But nobody here plays things safe too long: "Stop," "Path of Glory," "The Damned," and "Just Like on TV" take an apocalyptic, politically charged world view completely foreign to '80s metal, which set the Plasmatics above their peers, but didn't sell records. The band revisits safer gross-out turf on "Mistress of Taboo," "Put Your Love in Me," and "Country Fairs," on which Williams aims her gravel-throated blunderbuss at mainstream society ("Be polite/Do what's right/Say your prayers/Don't stay out at night"). The final effect is strangely stilted, veering between gotta-get-airplay and gotta-stand-fast impulses, yet the group flashes enough of its old rowdiness for a reasonably ...

Scissor Sisters songs
$13.89 Ever had honey poured in your ear?Tampa Bay is finding out what it is like with Rebekah Pulley and the Reluctant Prophets. The band's mix of folk, country, and rock showcase the writing, singing, and playing talents of a band that is making the local listener stand up to take notice of the more sweet soulful local writers. Rebekah Pulley began playing at the age of fifteen inspired by her father, a country-western musician who played for country great Charlie Ryan. Rebekah was born the fifth of nine children in Anchorage, Alaska and spent her earlier years brought up on the road in a rather unconventional family atmosphere. Continuing to travel the country on her own, she finally found her place in the local scene of St. Petersburg Florida. Over the years she has developed her sound and fan base as a notable singer and songwriter. In the fall of 2002 Rebekah hooked up with Nashville drummer Josh Touchton, who was ...

$13.15 Awards RadioindyGold Artist StatusMusicians Choice Judges' Pick': 419 North (July)CD reviewsRadioIndy "419 North" by the thought-provoking Butch Castetter is an honest collection of Americana rock tunes. Engaging lyrics that convey hope in the midst of tough life experiences make this CD well worth the listen! "Tell Me Some Good New" perhaps demonstrates this lyrical appeal most. Venting his frustration with all the negativity the media throws at us, Butch makes a fervent cry for us to focus on the positive things in life. Butch's passionate vocals coupled with superior musicianship are yet more reasons to travel down "419 North." The catchy, blues-reminiscent electric guitar riffs of "Big Brother" and the "Ideas of March" demonstrate the great instrumental hooks and vocally commanding choruses that bring these tunes to life! Polished with crisp, skillful production, "419 North" hits a home-run! Fans of adult alternative bands such as Counting Crows and honest Americana rock with a savory taste of southern flavor will absolutely love these songs!-Xavier P. and RadioIndyThe Montclair Times. (Montclair New Jersey)Down-to-earth, deep and honest are words that best describe the music and lyrics of Indianapolis, Ind., musician, Butch Castetter. His bluesy guitar-oriented rock tunes have traces of John Cougar and The Black Crowes. Most of Castetter's catchy tunes are based on true-life events. 'She's Good Lookin'' was inspired by 'Desperate Housewives' television star, Eva Longoria. While there's plenty of humorous tunes to sing along with, Castetter ...
