This 2-DVD special edition includes lots of the "making-of" of the legendary musical, along with deleted numbers, interviews, lots more.

Fading movie musical star Tony Hunter, down and out in Hollywood, decides to try his luck on the Broadway stage. Unfortunately, the simple hoofer discovers that a pretentious director has control of the project, and that instead of good humor, happy songs and a tapping chorus line, there'll be lengthy speeches, heavy drama and lots of deep soul-searching. Even worse, Tony's expected to dance with a classical ballerina! Thanks to the massive egos of everyone involved, the play, to no one's surprise, lays an egg. But now Tony takes charge, and he's out to prove the show must go on -- his way! Some of the dazzling Astaire dance numbers include "Triplets," "Girl Hunt," "Dancing in the Dark" and "That's Entertainment."

THE BAND WAGON was was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 1995. In 1931, Fred Astaire appeared in the Broadway musical revue THE BAND WAGON, which also featured songs by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz. The film borrows four songs ("Dancing in the Dark," "I Love Louisa," "Beggar's Waltz," and "New Sun in the Sky") from that production but not the plot. The film features 12 songs borrowed from various Broadway productions as well as two band-new musical numbers. "A Shine on Your Shoes" first appeared in FLYING COLORS; "Triplets" appeared in BETWEEN THE DEVIL; "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan" appeared in THE LITTLE SHOWS; and "Louisiana Hayride" appeared in COLORS. Clifton Webb was first approached about playing Jeffrey Cordova, the role that eventually went to Jack Buchanan. The inspiration for that character was José Ferrer, who produced four concurrent Broadway shows while acting in a fifth in the early 1950s. Shot in three-strip Technicolor.

"THE BAND WAGON has a note of melancholy along with its smiles."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"Fred Astaire is very amusing....Former stage designer Minnelli nails every theatreland joke..." -- Patrick Fahy, Sight and Sound

But I struggle to put it up there. A great classic with good dance numbers, Fred is his brilliant best. Maybe it is because I don't like Cyd that it puts me off.

Aguirre, The Wrath Of God DVD  (1973)

Band Wagon film
DVD $14.39  4 stars Top 500
Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane. Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, such as the time Herzog reportedly held a gun to Kinski's head to get him to finish a scene. Whatever transpired between Herzog and Kinski, it made for astonishing cinema, as evidenced by the actor's haunting performance and the entire film's powerfully hypnotic mood. DVD $10.29  5 stars
The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue. Angry and confused, Van starts hanging out with a couple of local punks and then meets Doug (Lowe), who appears to have everything Van dreams of. However, Van soon learns that the seemingly perfect Doug has some demons of his own, ones that eerily echo Van's. Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Behind The Scenes

Fraternal twins Conner (Flanery - SUICIDE KINGS) and Murphey (Reedus - GOSSIP) MacMannus are on a mission from God to rid Boston of crime. However, instead of signing up for the police force, these hard-drinking Irish-American brothers take the law into their own hands a la Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH. Heralded as saints by the city's beleaguered residents, the brothers also attract the attention of Paul Smecker (Dafoe - EXISTENZ), the openly gay FBI special agent assigned to investigate the spate of killings amongst the ranks of the Russian mafia. First-time director Duffy pulls out all the breaks in this inventive, action-packed thriller sure to please fans of HARD BOILED and RESERVOIR DOGS. Director Goro Taniguchi (INFINITE RYVIUS, S-CRY-ED) fashions another imaginative take on intergalactic space travel in his sci-fi series PLANETES. In the year 2075, travel between the earth, moon, and various space stations has become a routine part of human existence. But the increased traffic leaves behind floating pieces of debris that present a deadly hazard for traveling starships and must be cleared by a squad of hardworking debris collectors. As the collectors' newest recruit, idealistic Ai Tanabe quickly loses her enthusiasm for outer space when she joins the Half-Section unit and meets her cynical new partner, Hachimaki. But Tanabe soon discovers that hauling in space debris is not only dull and monotonous--it carries with it a unique set of difficulties and dangers. PLANETES avoids the wild, fantastical tropes of much sc-fi anime in favor of realistic hard science that emphasizes character development and gorgeously rendered animation. This collection presents the whole series in its entirety. Animated; Standard Screen; English Subtitles
