Excellent air combat scenes, some taut military-court drama, and even a little romance between Wayne and a lovely British nurse.

$10.49 In 1917, Russian revolutionaries overthrew the last czar, Nicholas, imprisoning him and his family and executing them one year later. Shortly thereafter, rumors began to spread that one of the czar's daughters, Anastasia, was still alive. In 1928, a woman surfaced claiming to be Anastasia. Based on the play, and the fictionalized account of actual events, ANASTASIA tells the story of Anna (Ingrid Bergman), the impoverished, suicidal Russian woman living in Paris who believes she may be Anastasia. When ex-military leader General Bounin, deftly played by Yul Brynner, and his cohorts discover Anna, they convince her, through grueling training sessions, that she is, in fact, the real princess. Yet Anna's own unmistakable memories unnerve even the general who, upon finding her, believed she was only a fake. The climax of the film, in which the Dowager Empress (Helen Hayes), who is still alive, meets Anastasia, is poignant and riveting. Shot on location in Paris, director Anatole Litvak commands incomparable performances from Bergman, Hayes, and Brynner in this captivating tale of lost identity. Bergman won her second Oscar for her winning portrayal that introduces just the right regal note of doubt about her real heritage.
A woman poses as heir to the Russian throne. Stars Ingrid Bergman, Yul Brynner. Commentary feature on the real Anastasia.

$18.49 "Why this sudden love of truth?" This is the question that launches the complicated dialogue of Baltasar Kormakur's beautifully complex, moody film about a dysfunctional family in Iceland. The utterly chilling opener in which a dilapidated fishery bursts into violent flames and burns, against the backdrop of a snow and rain storm, sets the tone for the volatile story that is to follow. Thordur Haraldsson (Gunnar Eyjofsson) is the head of a diverse and distant family, all of whom are returning the small village where Thordur still runs the family fishery. The youngest son, Agust (Hilmir Snaer Gudnason), and his pregnant girlfriend are traveling from Paris, and Agust's cousin Maria (Nina Dogg Filippusdottir) nervously awaits his arrival. Ragnheidur (Gudrun S. Gisladottir), the embittered daughter, shows up in a new car with her spoiled son and snobby husband. Meanwhile Haraldur (Sigurdur Skulason) is the one son who has stayed by his father's side, advising him in business matters and encouraging him to sell the defunct fishery and retire to Reykjavik. When the family comes together to discuss the future of the business, difficult memories intermingle with too many drinks and things get ugly, fast. All the while, director-producer-writer Kormakur keeps the intense mood of the film at a constant low roar, contrasting shots of Iceland's dramatic volcanic-glacial terrain and crystal-clear hot springs with the darkness of THE SEA'S desperate characters.

$10.35 Noah Baumbach's THE SQUID AND THE WHALE is an excruciatingly humane, often hilarious portrait of a disintegrating family in mid-1980s Brooklyn. Set in the stately yet off-kilter neighborhood of Park Slope, the film tells the story of the Berkmans, a quintessentially New York family struggling to keep things together. Family patriarch Bernard (Jeff Daniels) is a published author and writing teacher whose insecurity over his own lack of recognition continues to plague him. Meanwhile, his wife, Joan (Laura Linney), is grappling with her own sense of unsettlement. Their sons, who are caught in the crossfire, express their confusion in different ways: 16-year-old Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) tries to pass off Pink Floyd's "Hey You" as his own hit in the school talent show, while his 12-year-old brother Frank (Owen Kline) begins to explore his burgeoning sexuality and alcoholism. When Bernard and Joan finally decide to separate, the family must confront their unraveling situation head on.
Rarely has family dysfunction been captured so frankly and honestly as in THE SQUID AND THE WHALE. Baumbach claims his film is only semi-autobiographical, but, from the pitch-perfect writing and nostalgic tone, it feels as if we're watching home videos of the writer-director's past. Featuring an outstanding pop-music soundtrack (Bert Jansch, the Feelies, Lou Reed), the film also boasts performances that seem certain to earn end-of-the-year accolades.
When a novelist and his wife divorce, jealousy divides the family and their 2 sons take sides in this powerful, funny, heartbreaking, award-winning drama. Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels, Jesse Eisenberg, Owen Kline, William Baldwin, and Anna Paquin star.
