Like those albums, too, THE RISING was recorded in Goodall's self-constructed studio and features Goodall playing all the instruments himself, including various guitars, synthesizers, flutes, mandolin, samplers, and a variety of percussion devices. From the sultry airs of "Invocation, Pt. 3" through the pulsing, ambient strains of "Temple Journey, Pt. 2," this addition to Goodall's MEDICINE WOMAN series is positive, relaxing, entrancing music, and a testament to the artist's formidable musical ability.
Personnel: Medwyn Goodall (various instruments).
MEDICINE WOMAN III: THE RISING is the third installment in a series by the composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Medwyn Goodall. Like MEDICINE WOMAN and MEDICINE WOMAN II, THE RISING explores through music (which blends world fusion and New Age in an evocative way) the native mythology of North and South America, focusing on its metaphors for spiritual trials, rituals, and rebirths.

| | Shakuhachi Surprise Space Streakings Sighted Over Mount Shasta CD (1996)
Medicine Woman, Vol. 3: The Rising album
$13.79 Coming at the listener like a musical cyclone, Shakuhachi Surprise manages to attack with repeated guitar riffs that wear you down mentally. Some of the music creates a video game soundtrack, where the pace and the screams conjure up thoughts of monsters riding supercharged mopeds ("Shacho"). Other songs range from the singers sounding like they're convulsing uncontrollably after a bad plate of sushi to metallic dances where ballet shoes equipped with cleats have burrowed into ...

| | Variable Unit Handbook For The Apocalypse CD (2003)
Medicine Woman, Vol. 3: The Rising songs
$11.99 The music world is full of artists who like to think that they're "beyond categorization" when, in fact, they're quite easy to categorize and aren't nearly as unique as they would like us to believe. But Variable Unit (V.U. for short) really is difficult to categorize. Parts of Handbook for the Apocalypse are relevant to alternative rap, and yet, other parts of this 2003 release aren't rap in the conventional sense. V.U.'s Azeem raps at times, but much of the material is essentially spoken word with a track -- and that track could be influenced by hip-hop, soul-jazz, electronica or all the above. One shouldn't think, however, that V.U. is suffering from an identity crisis or that Handbook for the Apocalypse is unfocused. V.U. knows exactly what they're doing; this CD doesn't fit neatly into any one category, but Handbook for the Apocalypse always has a strong sense of purpose. Lyrically, this is an extremely sociopolitical disc; whether V.U. is getting their points across with rapping, spoken word, or samples, the album is a 55-minute commentary on the problems of the world. And by the time Handbook for the Apocalypse finishes playing, V.U. has addressed everything from suicide bombings to police misconduct to ...
