Today, Tomorrow and Forever is easily one of the most popular titles in Patsy Cline's catalog -- and, in this case, the word "title" refers to the name of the record, not the record itself. This title has been recycled numerous times since her tragic death, presumably because it offers a fitting tribute to her legacy. Each collection that sports the name is considerably different, usually sharing only the title track, but sometimes more than one. Sony Music Special Products -- who licensed all of the material from Masters International -- turns out one of the better Today, Tomorrow and Forever albums with their ten-track disc. Apart from "Walkin' After Midnight," there aren't too many crossover hits here, but each track is very good, with the quality often -- in the case of "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray," "Stop the World (And Let Me Off)," and "Walking Dream" -- verging on the excellent. In 1995, the Big Boulder Ski Area and Jack Frost Mountain in the Poconos began presenting a festival dubbed The Musical Gathering, which was intended to pay "tribute to the legendary artists that formed the psychedelic music scene of the late 1960s." Those words were taken from the liner notes from Relix's Third Annual Gathering on the Mountain, an aural souvenir of the third of these concerts. The music on the compilation is not really psychedelic, at least according to the average listener's definition. Instead, it's rootsy jam music in the vein of the Grateful Dead or Hot Tuna, whose Jorma Kaukonen dominates this seven-track collection with three songs. All the featured acts -- which also include Tom Constanten, the Donna Jean Band, Merl Saunders and Toni Brown -- share a similar esthetic (as well as a fondness for covers), which makes the record hold together well, but if you're not into this kind of elastic jam, chances are this will sound really monotonous. However, it's not bad -- it has an appealing laid-back vibe and it's pleasant enough to have in the background. PERFECTLY GOOD GUITAR is John Hiatt's finest album of the '90s. The title track, which got quite a bit of airplay on 1993's then nascent adult album alternative radio format, is one of his most brilliant songs ever. It's a funny yet deceptively serious song examining the correlation between the way rock stars name their guitars after women, and the way they ritualistically destroy guitars onstage.
