Electric Bebop Band: Paul Motian; Tsutomu Takeishi (electric double bass); Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Schoeppach. Personnel: Paul Motian (drums); Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Schoeppach, Brad Shepik (electric guitar); Joshua Redman (tenor saxophone); Stomu Takeishi (electric bass). Recording information: Power Station Studios, New York, NY (04/1992); Power Station, New York, NY (04/1992). Photographers: Cheung Ching Ming; Mark Malabrigo. This intriguing set features Motian leading a group consisting of the young, great Joshua Redman on tenor, both Brad Schoeppach and Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitars, and bassist Stomu Takeishi. The ten songs on the CD (which include two straight versions of "Scrapple From the Apple") are all bebop standards, but these versions are often a bit outside, a touch rock-ish, and quite unpredictable. The guitarists keep the music from ever getting too comfortable and it is quite interesting hearing Redman in this setting. ~ Scott YanowEntertainment Weekly (12/10/93, p.79) - "...Just when you thought bebop had been sanitized and fossilized comes a variation out of left field....Paul Motian swings fervently and freshly..." - Rating: A- Vibe (12/93-1/94, p.150) - "...Haden's presence gives the [PAUL MOTIAN] group the boomy, supple flow that is his hallmark, inspiring Motian to punchy, staccato beats that strike these ears as borderline hip hop..." Musician (12/93, p.92) - "...[Motian] adapts electric bass and guitars to modern jazz without patronizing anyone. Groovy...." Paul Motian & The Electric Bebop Band
$11.79 The Sixties weren't especially kind to '50s stars like Cliff Richard and the Shadows (whose talented guitarist, Hank Marvin, had ironically been an idol to many nascent '60s guitar heroes, including Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page). This anniversary set reunites the singer and his erstwhile backing group, after both had gone their separate ways several years earlier. Though they were recorded at the height of the decade's fertile period of musical experimentation, instrumentals like "Voyage to the Bottom of the Bath" and "The Magical Mrs. Clamps" have their origins firmly in '50s British pop, while singer and band's collaborations with the famed U.K. orchestral arranger Norrie Paramor, on tracks such as "What's Behind the Eyes of Mary," recall some of Tom Jones' and Gene Pitney's more dramatic moments. Established 1958 was a tenth anniversary effort by Cliff Richard & the Shadows, reuniting singer and band after several years of establishing separate musical identities. It showcases the songwriting of the bandmembers -- Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Bennett, and John Rostill, who, singly or in combination, wrote everything here -- and Richard's preferred style of the period, an adult pop/rock style not too far removed from what Neil Diamond was doing on the opposite side of the Atlantic (except that Richard didn't write songs). Seven vocal numbers feature Richard and seven mixed instrumental and vocal numbers showcase the band ...
