Personnel: Pastor Troy (rap vocals); Pimpin' Ken, Little Pere (rap vocals). Photographer: Shannon P. McCollum. The first song on FACE OFF: PART II, "WWW? (Who Want War)," finds Atlanta, Georgia's Pastor Troy in a ferocious rage, challenging all comers; however, 15 tracks later, he closes the record with the swift-moving, but tenderly inspirational, "Keep on Movin'." This stark contrast is the norm for Pastor Troy. Throughout this album and his previous records, this reverend of crunk has made a tradition out of combining a rich, sincere spirituality with a hardcore urban vibe. FACE OFF: PART II is Pastor Troy's sequel to his successful 2001 record, and is supremely faithful in its life-in-the-now mentality, in both its lyrics and the accompanying beats. He keeps up a relentless pace, roaring "I'm coming at ya" on "Murder Man," and spinning threats over a Halloween beat on "Get Dat Money Part II." Troy wraps his dirty Southern drawl around an inspired metal mix on "Acid Rain," and wistfully reflects on the pristine ballad backdrop of "Respect Game." FACE OFF: PART II reveals just a little more of the conflicted figure that is Pastor Troy. | | Mind Of Mannie Fresh CD (2004)
Face Off: Part II
$12.65 Personnel: Mannie Fresh (rap vocals, various instruments); David Banner (rap vocals, various instruments); Lil' Mo, Tateeze, Birdman , Reel , Six Shot, Charlie Pettaway. With a track list 30-long and a thousand things going on at once, The Mind of Mannie Fresh is just about as good a title as you could find for this crazy ride. The album brings to mind a Southern, crunked-up version of Prince Paul's Psychoanalysis: What Is It?, an album that could be seen as self-indulgent, but could also be seen as a rare journey through a busy producer's mind. Tracks like "Real Big," "How We Ride," and "Tell It Like It Is" are just some of the straight-ahead party pleasers with impact and grooves that stand up to any other chart-topping crunk. That shouldn't be too surprising considering the amount of ...

| | David Grisman Retrograss CD (1999)
Face Off: Part II
$14.45 /John Hartford/Mike Seeger. Personnel: David Grisman (vocals, guitar, guitar-banjo, mandolin, mandolin-banjo, mandola); John Hartford (vocals, guitar, banjo, fiddle); Mike Seeger (vocals, guitar, guitar-banjo, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, jews harp); Sam Grisman (bass). Producers: David Grisman, John Hartford, Mike Seeger. Recorded at Dawg Studios, San Rafael, California. Includes liner notes by David Grisman, John Hartford and Mike Seeger. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. RETROGRASS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. On the album cover, Retrograss is defined as "music shifted back in time," a direction that -- while not impossible to conceive -- is mildly shocking considering David Grisman's relentlessly progressive approach toward traditional styles. Alas, democracy still rules at Dawg Studios, and with John Hartford and Mike Seeger signing on, it comes as no surprise that this collection is a step back in time -- old time, that is. The album features nearly one hour of 20th century classics "retrograssed" to achieve a rustic, jug band feel. From the opening banjo rolls of "My Walking Shoes," it's pretty obvious what you're getting into, and there are no quantum leaps thematically, tonally, or otherwise from that point on. However, Retrograss does explore a very fecund and diverse American musical fabric, which has threads of country, blues, bluegrass, ...

| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Face Off: Part II
$13.15 Personnel: Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Killer Mike, Krayzie Bone, Lil Wayne, Pastor Troy, Rasaq, Scarface, Lil' Flip, Natalie , Bun B (rap vocals). With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record. An experienced MC with piles of mixtapes and ...
