| | Better Than Ezra How Does Your Garden Grow? CD (1998)
Cranberries, The - Live review
$5.95 Principally recorded at Fudge, New Orleans, Louisiana between January 19 and March 30, 1998.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Better Than Ezra is the kind of band that knows how to go with the musical flow, using their chameleonic qualities to adapt to the changing musical times. They emerged in the wake of Nirvana as post-grunge rockers, full of bad-boy attitude and plangent guitars. On GARDEN they shift gears, embracing the rise of electronica with their newly expanded sonic palette. In place of the rockist beats and Cobainesque vocals and guitar, there's loads of atmospheric, almost trippy synth and a definite trip-hop influence in the rhythm section. Even the vocals are electronically processed on some tunes, for a more cutting-edge sound.
Producer (and Daniel Lanois cohort) Malcolm Burn is surely to thank for helping develop the sound here, which includes a guest horn section, string arrangements and plenty of non-electronic keyboard work (mostly by singer Kevin Griffin). Those who thought Better Than Ezra were just Nirvana wannabees will be presently surprised by the sonic left turn of HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?, while those who appreciated the band's musicality all along will have ...
| | Blind Melon CD (1992)
Cranberries, The - Live DVD
$8.85 Given the preponderance of synthesizers and samples on contemporary radio outlets, fans of guitar bands must be feeling a little let down, when along comes a Blind Melon. BLIND MELON puts a contemporary slant on metal, blues and assorted psychedelia without sounding lost in the past. Nevertheless, their deep roots in classic FM sounds help define their appeal, not unlike that of a Pearl Jam.
Vocalist Hoon howls at the moon in the best tradition of Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne and Axl Rose, while the Glen Graham-Brad Smith rhythm team moves convincingly from rock thrash ("Paper ...

Cranberries, The - Live film
$14.89 Recorded live at The Orpheum, Boston, Massachussets and at The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia between 1979 & 1983.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Recorded live at The Orpheum, Boston, Massachussets in 1979, and at The Omni, Atlanta, Georgia in 1983.
By the time The Police broke up in 1984, they'd already traveled the world and played before millions of people in hundreds of countries. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland had come a long way from their first American visit, when they drove across the continent piled into a van and played in any dive that would have them.
LIVE chronicles The Police at opposite ends of their career. Disc 1 was originally recorded for Boston's WBCN-FM in November of 1979; REGGATA DE BLANC had come out months before and the band was still raw, a full year away from cracking the American Top 10. The stripped down sound The Police displayed shows a group not far removed from the evolving new wave movement, which dominated the charts in their native England at the time. The versions of "Walking On The Moon" and "The Bed's Too Big Without You" point to the heavy reggae undertones--whether in the dub-like dynamics of Summers' guitar playing, or the rhythmic interplay that Sting and Copeland tease each other with--that made the band's sound so unique. Rare versions of the band's first two independent singles, "Fallout" and "Landlord," are part of a set that was as close to punk rock as The Police ever got.
Disc 2 is from The Omni, a hockey rink ...

Cranberries, The - Live DVD
$52.15 WORK OF DIRECTOR JONATHAN GLAZER: Having made the successful directorial leap from music videos to major motion pictures, Jonathan Glazer (BIRTH, SEXY BEAST) has some of his early work collected here. This release from the Directors Series label draws on many of Glazer's projects, including music videos and commercials, and it also features interviews with such luminaries as Ben Kingsley, Nicole Kidman, and SEXY BEAST star Ray Winstone.
WORK OF DIRECTOR ANTON CORBIJN: Anton Corbijn established himself with grainy black-and-white photographs that captured the raw intensity of performers such as Joy Division, Tom Waits, and Nick Cave. Initial dalliances behind a different sort of camera saw Corbijn taking a nascent stab at music video direction with work for indie-rock stalwarts Echo & The Bunnymen ("Seven Seas"), esoteric pop stars Propaganda ("Dr. Mabuse"), and stadium-filling electro stars Depeche Mode ("Behind the Wheel"). Once established, Corbijn delivered a slew of further videos, most of which mirrored his style in the photographic medium. All these promos and many others are collected here, forming an impressive music video archive from a director who has produced some remarkable work in the field.
WORK OF DIRECTOR MARK ROMANEK: Mark Romanek's eclectic career saw him helm his first feature film (STATIC) in 1988 before establishing himself as a music video director with promos for a diverse array of artists. Among the musicians whose work has been directed by Romanek are pop diva Madonna ("Bedtime Story," "Rain"), rock legends David Bowie ("Jump, They Say") and Mick Jagger ("God Gave Me Everything"), ...
