Personnel: Ruby Braff (cornet); Ruby Braff; Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar); Dick Hyman, Bill Charlap (piano); Jake Hanna (drums). Audio Mixer: Gary Baldassari. Liner Note Author: Michael Steinman. Recording information: Nola Studios, New York, NY (03/18/2001/09/13/2001); Sheraton Sand Key Hotel, Clearwater Beach, FL (03/18/2001/09/13/2001). To say that Ruby Braff was one of the most exciting cornetist in jazz wouldn't be completely accurate. But there's always been something thrilling about his unique voice -- by turns gruff, sweet, lyrical and feisty, often assertive but rarely shouting. This disc brings together six tracks recorded in 2001, just two days after the September 11 terrorist attacks, with three others recorded six-months earlier in March of that year. The March session featured Braff in an unusual quintet setting, with pianists Bill Charlap and Dick Hyman, drummer Jake Hanna, and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli; there's absolutely no reason why this instrumentation should work, but it does, and their sweetly swinging renditions of classic material like "Them There Eyes" and Count Basie's "Blue and Sentimental" are among Braff's finest work. The final three tracks feature an equally unusual trio -- Braff, Charlap and Hanna playing in a relaxed live setting, running through three swing standards: "You're Driving Me Crazy," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "When I Fall in Love," all of them tunes that Braff made his very own decades ago. Both sessions are delightful in very different ways, but in both cases Braff plays as if every note matters. His tone has never been richer, his phrasing never more graceful. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson You Brought A New Kind Of Love Music Ruby Braff You Brought A New Kind Of Love Songs You Brought A New Kind Of Love Review

Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson ...

| | Jackie Allen Tangled CD (2006)
You Brought A New Kind Of Love
$20.25 Personnel: Jackie Allen (vocals); Steve Eisen (flute, tenor saxophone); Orbert Davis (trumpet); Ben Lewis (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, organ); Hans Strum (bass instrument). On her Blue Note debut (and eighth recording overall), vocalist Jackie Allen stretches her already crossover approach to where the seams show. Thank God. She is a fine jazz singer and has a way with ballads and standards that is her own to be sure -- and she records a couple of them here -- but her gift with more pop-oriented material is utterly distinctive and even innovative, since there isn't another singer out there who phrases like her. Tangled was produced with great taste by Eric Hochberg -- who also chaired her last session, Love Is Blue, and has played bass with everyone from the jazz stalwart Kurt Elling to one of the greatest crossover folk and jazz singers in history, the great Terry Callier. The set has a few standards, like Rodgers & Hart's "You're Nearer" and "Everything I've Got Belongs ...
