(2 Customer Reviews)
The title of Jay Geils' solo debut is Jay Geils Plays Jazz!, but for many listeners that exclamation mark should be substituted with a question mark, since Geils has long been associated with the raw, greasy, house-party blues-rock of the J. Geils Band, which seems a million miles away from jazz. Thing is, for as down and dirty as the JGB got, they were always exceptional musicians, something that was proven in Geils' '90s blues band with Magic Dick, Bluestime. That latter outfit gave Geils room to grow as a guitarist, as did his other project, the New Guitar Summit, and the full extent of his transformation to jazz guitarist is shown on Jay Geils Plays Jazz! This is firmly grounded in '50s bop, favoring the laid-back nature of cool but the chops of hard bop, and it dabbles in big bands, blues, and swing, including Western swing in the form a nifty version of Bob Wills' "I Hear You Talkin' to Me." While there are no great surprises here, Geils has supple support from pianist/organist Al Wilson, bassist John Turner, and drummer Gordon Grottenthaler, plus some nice spotlights from saxophonists Scott Hamilton, Greg Piccolo, and Crispin Cioe. Geils himself is tasteful and engaging throughout, making this album a thoroughly enjoyable first foray into jazz for the guitarist. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Ronnie Earl Duke Meets The Earl CD (2005)
Jay Geils Plays Jazz! CD music
$14.29 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's in the right, leading to some wonderful guitar dialogues, particularly on an epic, nearly 16-minute-long version of ...

| | David Gilmour CD (1978) Remastered
Jay Geils Plays Jazz! songs
$6.75 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped ...

| | TJR Another Roll Of The Dice CD (2007)
Jay Geils Plays Jazz! album
$8.55 TJR'Another Roll of the Dice' Release Date: 2007 Summary:TJR knows how to combine the great elements of classic Rock n' Roll with sharp and humorous modern observations. Review:An antidote for rock fans starved of the tight backbeat and wailing guitar solos of classic rock, TJR's 'Another Roll of the Dice' is a sonic homage to what is great about Rock n' Roll, with the addition of cleverly interspersed social commentary. The message of the album's first track, "Peace, Love, and Don't Trust MTV" will be readily championed by any fans of music who, like myself, are disenchanted with the 'music' station's false advertising regarding its programming. Next up is "One Summer Morning", a mellow track with a great beat that is reminiscent of Thin Lizzy in its vocals and an acoustic George Thorogood in its ...
