| | Cradle Of Filth Nymphetamine CD Cradle Of Filth Discography of CDs
(22 Customer Reviews)
Relying less on synths, strings, and operatic background vocals, Cradle of Filth turns up the guitars a notch and delivers wave after wave of brutal yet melodic riffs anchored in the band's early influences. Guitarists Paul Allender and James McIlroy twist lines into dark harmonies on "Nemesis" and "Coffin Fodder," while delicate piano intros add atmosphere to "English Fire" and "Absinthe with Faust." The title track features a duet with Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves Eyes) that epitomizes the idea of beauty and the beast. NYMPHETAMINE proves that less can indeed mean more.
NYMPHETAMINE (according to the band, a term defined as a ravenous addiction to classically beautiful women) is Cradle of Filth's sixth full-length album, and third in a row on a new label (in this case, Roadrunner Records). It's also stripped of the grandeur provided by a full orchestra and choir on 2003's DAMNATION AND A DAY. Time spent on the road with 2003's Ozzfest left the band with a need to simplify the arrangements, in an effort to capture the ferocity of their legendary live shows. What's left is heavily thrash-influenced and teeming with fluid guitar lines rooted in the classic British metal of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.

Great A great job better than damnation and a Day. Submitted by phernandez (Honduras) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
English Fire Nymphetamine was one of Cradles best works to date, and the Special Edition release just added that much more to it, including a proper version of Nyphetamine with the normal female lead singing (Sarah Jezebel Deva), not saying anything bad about Liv Kristine on the original version though (love Liv). The cover tracks that they hit they did the usual with and made the song their own, and man they sound wicked! Devil Woman has probably been played out in my house since I've gotten the CD. And the new tracks from Cradle are just awesome! It's just a pity we had to wait for a Special Edition to get "Soft White Throat". For people who haven't TIVO'd the Nymphetamine video it's also on there, which is of course a nice little bonus ^_^. At any rate, 5 (pointed) stars out of 5. If your into Cradle, either add this one to the library next to the original version or sell the old one, this one is a must have! Submitted by cormyre (Grove City, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? | | Darkthrone Cult Is Alive CD (2006) (Import) England; Limited Edition; Enhanced CD
Nymphetamine album
$23.29 At a time when most of the first wave of Norwegian black metal bands are long gone, Darkthrone has become the senior figures of this particular subgenre almost by default; they're like the Rolling Stones of death metal. And much like the Rolling Stones around the time of Some Girls and Emotional Rescue, Darkthrone now seems to be caught between staying true to their original sound and adapting to the commercial marketplace. The album's first single, "Too Old, Too Cold" is easily the most immediately accessible song the band has ever done, sounding more like American hardcore punks the Misfits than anyone else, and elsewhere "Graveyard Slut" and "Whiskey Funeral" add to the album's punky feel. Longtime fans might grouse about the somewhat diluted sound of the album, but the shift in emphasis is both subtle and effective. Rather than simply going through the black metal motions, The Cult Is Alive is one of Darkthrone's most satisfying recent albums. ~ Stewart ...

| | Manowar Triumph Of Steel CD (1992)
Nymphetamine music CDs
$9.09 With a 28-minute opening track, slightly expanded lyrical themes, and some of the best rhythmic onslaughts recorded by Manowar, The Triumph of Steel is perhaps the band's finest '90s offering. While never abandoning their myopic swords-and-sorcery themed power metal, Manowar had evolved musically during their first decade together and the music of this 1992 release benefits from what must have been countless hours woodshedding extreme musical figures. Tighter than a tumble-dried loin cloth, the standout track "Ride the Dragon" is an exceptionally fast number that signifies a commitment toward high-speed compositions on the part of bassist/songwriter Joey DeMaio. There is absolutely no subtlety or irony to Manowar or their cartoon metal, and many listeners will have trouble taking either seriously. Their credo, "death to false metal," and similar messages are constantly repeated, and unlike other comic book outfits like Gwar, Manowar aren't hamming it up for laughs. They're dead serious. While it's understandable that audiences and critics refuse to even acknowledge Manowar's heavy-handed rallying cries -- in America that is, while the band is often given favorable notices in the European metal press -- there is ...
| | Deep Purple Made In Europe CD (1976) England
Nymphetamine songs
$9.79 Fronted by a pre-Whitesnake David Coverdale, legendary rockers Deep Purple recorded the live MADE IN EUROPE in 1975 with five tracks highlighted by "Strormbringer."
This live recording, made in 1975, comes from Ritchie Blackmore's last three concerts with the band before leaving to form Rainbow. It features Deep Purple Mark III, with David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals. Coverdale is a convincing hard rock singer, though he lacks the winning quirkiness of Ian Gillan, while Hughes is a busier and more up-front player than Roger Glover. While "Burn" and "Mistreated" are worthy successors to previous Deep Purple tunes, the remaining material is weaker, and overall, this stuff is definitely a couple of notches below the glory days of Made ...

| | Ratos De Porao Guerra Civil Canibal CD (2001)
Nymphetamine CD music
$9.89 An exceptional hardcore/metal crossover band from Sao Paolo, Brazil, Ratos de Porao (Basement Rats) play ferocious, speedy music. But what sets them apart from other South American bands is that they aren't completely stuck on death metal and its apocalyptic vibe, though there is a little of that in their music. These guys actually have a sense of humor and can play a variety of styles. But the cover to Guerra Civil Canibal is going to be more than a lot of people can take. It's an extremely sick, graphic picture of a cannibal chewing on somebody's leg. You won't find it on the shelves of Wal-Mart or Best Buy. There's no logical reason for them to have chosen this photo for their cover other than shock value, so it seems rather pointless and will either deter ...
| | Chuck Owen Here We Are CD (2004)
Nymphetamine music CDs
$13.25 Since the end of the big band era, it has been extremely difficult to keep larger ensembles together for any period of time, but Chuck Owen & the Jazz Serge have done so, with the added handicap of being based in South Florida, far from the New York jazz scene. One thing apparent immediately is that Owen (a longtime music professor at the University of South Florida) composes music that obviously delights the members of his ensemble. The energy and imagination within "E Ticket" compares to the works of Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, or Toshiko Akiyoshi. This multi-faceted work showcases the brilliant Canadian trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, violinist Rob Thomas (who brings to mind violinist Jean-Luc Ponty in his pre-fusion period), and tenor saxophonist Jack Wilkins. ...
| | Hammerfall Threshold CD (2006) Bonus Track; Japan
Nymphetamine songs
$36.99 Following the unnaturally extended layoff enforced by guitarist Oscar Dronjak's motorcycle accident in 2003, Swedish heavy metal traditionalists Hammerfall waited barely a year between their eventual return with fifth album, Chapter V in 2005, and the release of LP number six, Threshold, in 2006. This suddenly rushed release schedule -- though likely resulting from nothing more than a backlog of pre-written material, ready to come out -- takes something of an uncertain turn on Threshold's first few numbers, which comprise a decent but terribly predictable title track; a lackluster autopilot job and a repetitive chorus in "The Fire Burns Forever"; and a lead-footed crawl through "Rebel Inside," which not even Accept-like choral battalions can jolt into life. Indeed, the claim may be redundant when relating to a band whose very talents involve being true to metal's classic sound, but all three simply sound too safe and formulaic. Luckily, salvation comes not a moment too soon when fourth cut, "Natural High," arrives with an energetic burst and surprisingly atypical lyrics to inject a much needed dose of excitement, which is subsequently reprised by additional standouts like "Howlin' with the 'Pac," "Shadow Empire" (boasting the album's best riff), and "Genocide," with its dramatic introductory stops and starts. In fact, with the exception of another, check-your-watch drag-fest called "Carved in Stone," most every remaining track has something memorable to recommend it. "Dark Wings, Dark Words" is the record's ambitious and evocative semi-ballad, "Reign of the Hammer" is a brisk, hardly groundbreaking, but nevertheless welcome instrumental, and the anthemic "Titan" provides a grand finale worthy of the Swedes' majestic habits. In other words, though it lacks the overall consistency of certain previous efforts, Threshold still produces a fair amount of quality goods to appease most Hammerfall fans -- or else it wouldn't have entered the Swedish charts at number one. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
