| | Bill Ward When The Bough Breaks CD Bill Ward Discography of CDs
Just before the original Black Sabbath lineup became a summer touring institution around the turn of the century, drummer Bill Ward had a lot of time on his hands, hence his second overall solo release, 1997's When the Bough Breaks. Longtime fans expecting Ward to follow in the same direction as Sabbath's trademark sludgy riff rock may be taken aback, but such midtempo selections as "Hate," "Shine," and the bluesy "When I Was a Child" feature lyrics that appear to catch Ward in an "open your heart" mode. And what's not to like about one of the greatest song titles of recent memory, "Please Help Mommy (She's a Junkie)"? Sure, Ozzy's solo albums will outsell Ward's by a wide margin, but of the two artists' most recent recordings, Ward's are the more interesting and unpredictable, as proven by When the Bough Breaks. ~ Greg Prato
Just before the original Black Sabbath lineup became a summer touring institution around the turn of the century, drummer Bill Ward had a lot of time on his hands, hence his second overall solo release, 1997's When the Bough Breaks. The only thing is, few fans ever knew about the album's release, as it's been in and out of print a few times, and confusingly has sported two separate covers (one with two roses, the other of Ward backstage during the '70s, modeling "the Jesus look"). In 2005 came the re-release of Bough, which turns out to sound quite a bit like the recent recordings of Sabbath disciple Chris Goss and his band Masters of Reality (especially 2004's Give Us Barabbas). | | Original Brothers & Sisters Of Love Legende Of Jeb Minor CD (1999)
When The Bough Breaks songs
$5.99 The most remarkable thing about the Original Brothers and Sisters of Love's debut album The Legende of Jeb Minor is that it sounds entirely out of time. If anything, it sounds like a great unreleased album from the vaults of Harvest Records, since its blend of folk, psychedelia, prog-rock, and sea shanties is of piece with the legendary British label's willfully eccentric bent. Still, such a compliment may seem backhanded, a way to dismiss the record as a self-conscious attempt to recreate the '70s. That's not the case at all. The Legende of Jeb Minor may recall classic progressive albums, but that's only because the Brothers and Sisters have the inclination to follow their ideas past their logical conclusion, resulting in fresh configurations of familiar sounds. The Legende is firmly rooted in folk traditions -- most of the songs are built on acoustic guitars, there are whistles and accordions peppered throughout the mix, the backing vocals are a blend of sea shanties and campfire singalongs -- but it isn't a folk album because the band's sensibilities are somewhat post-modern. They don't see any boundaries between musical styles or genres, or even lyrical subject; there are songs that play as fables and others that sound like myths. They never renounce the past -- they build on it, creating an album that is gently mesmerizing ...

When The Bough Breaks music CDs
$34.29 The Proper Box folks have assembled a massive collection of jazz and swing-related material from the second World War, much of it performed right under the noses of indignant fascists; some of it prepared with the de facto backing or propaganda interests of the occupying parties in mind. All politics aside, the music is a blast -- vital and vibrant as well as more varied than some snobs might suspect. As for the motivations of the players and the forces which oppressed them, listeners should feel free to take some of the commentary with a grain of salt, or a plate of sauerkraut if that seems more appropriate. Inevitably there will be people who will not enjoy listening to Django Reinhardt once they begin to speculate on his relationship with the Gestapo, just as there are listeners who shelve their Jimi Hendrix sides permanently once they read biographical tomes suggesting the great guitarist liked to beat up his girlfriends.
Expatriate Mike Zwerin claims to have experienced something of a nervous breakdown writing his book Swing and the Nazis, the publication of which precedes this box set by decades. It is indeed a heavy subject: whether it is the tale of a Jewish family who were allowed to step off a certain deadly train in trade for some rare Count Basie sides, or the careers of some of the players featured herein. Even the loutish storm troopers had the sense to realize this type of music attracted dissidents; so they would let gigs happen just to keep their eye on whoever showed up. How much some of these ...

$12.59 This is the fourth album from Orange County rockers Project 86, who started out in 1996 and have had a rather tortured experience in the industry ever since. Having dallied briefly with a major label and left the Tooth & Nail stable in 2003, the band is back together with the latter label in 2004 and back to making the tough, abrasive (but ...
