Like a marriage of Evanescence's shameless pop hooks and Nightwish's goth metal tendencies, the second album by Visions of Atlantis sounds like it can't decide which band's audience it's aiming for. Unfortunately, the two camps have very little overlap, making it likely that fans of Nightwish's grandiose symphonic metal will be put off by the overbearing pop elements of would-be hits like "Cast Away" and "Lost," and Evanescence fans would find the bombastic symphonic metal of songs like "Realm of Fantasy" and "State of Suspense" irritating. New male singer Mario Plank has a much more pop-oriented voice than his predecessor, Christian Stani, and the increased focus on the male vocals at the expense of lead singer Nicole Bogner's operatic wails both makes the band more accessible and loses a big part of its musical identity. While Cast Away isn't an outright failure, it presents a young band with growing pains that hopefully will either integrate the two sides of its musical personality better in the future or allow one of them to wither away. ~ Stewart Mason

Visions Of Atlantis Cast Away Songs Cast Away Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Another undiscovered treasure in symphonic metal These guys, like many other symphonic metal bands, are weirdly unknown. Their songs are awesome. The only weak songs here are; "State Of Suspense" and "Last Shut Of My Eyes". By weak, I don't mean unbarable, just not in the same level as the other tracks. The two best songs are "Send Me A Light" and the fantastic "Lemuria". I think its ok for people to dislike the band's music, but you cannot possibly dislike those 2 tracks. Anyway, the only thing I dislike about these guys is the pop-sounding male vocals. I mean, Nicole is great on her own, she doesn't need soft male vocals. Besides that, the album is great. They show a very promising future. 4.5/5 Submitted by walteraquilina (Malta) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$22.75 Conceived, developed and completed as a labour of love,\'Dream Dogs\' exists as an expression of the creativity and the love of music of all involved. Casting aside concerns about things one can\'t control :\"Will people like it?\" \"What is our market?\" etc. and focusing on bringing these songs up to maturity we likewise foolishly cast to the wind worries about lengths of songs, when songs were written and what songs belonged in the mix, choosing the \'water seeks it\'s own level\' approach. We eschewed over-production and micromanagement unless focusing on a given detail truly,in our belief, served the song. Everything that could be played \'off the floor\' \'on the day\' was played...then we finished..not in haste.. but listening for the completed song...if there is any such thing!! The idea was to take pride in the work so that music lovers could take joy in the result. The moods are diverse and what holds it all together,in our belief,is that all the songs are played by the same people and,in the main, written by the same people. The songs I wrote with Russ began as poems with rhythmic intentions(mostly). The rest began with chord sequences, melody and finally lyric.....The influences on this music range from Stevie Wonder to Billy Joel to Mahavishnu John McLaughlin to Joni Mitchell to Steely Dan to Weather Report to Led Zeppelin to Chick Corea to Yes to every music we\'ve ever loved!!!The players:Russ Boswell-A dynamic performer of live music-he\'ll attack any chart with gusto-Russ is also a session player of note in Toronto (and elsewhere) having played on numerous albums (check his website). This, however, is not the whole story ..: a writer lurked within for years. The day Russ asked \'Got any lyrics?\' was a momentous one for me. We quickly had 25 co-writes,7 of which are on this album. Tony Zorzi- Although well-known and respected in the music world as an accomplished guitar-player and more,my thought for years has been that that his true brilliance was not really being seen...his ability to dig gold out of the corners of the music...his subtle, quirky magnificence. I wanted to see more of this come out and I hope that this album went some way toward occasioning that.Bruce Moffet- A quick look at Bruce\'s resume- from Prairie Oyster to Mary Margaret O\'Hara to Corey Hart to this project reveals the rich dimension of his musical character. Always a team player who sees the big musical picture, his compositional approach to this music make him indispensable...and those big fat grooves creating a world of space don\'t hurt a bit.Rob Gusevs- Long known as a funkmeister and a keyboardist of surpassing purity and pristine elegance,Rob\'s contribution to this album will be seen as singular to those who listen more than once! Hold things together he does...but! oh so much more.Rusty McCarthy- Some kind of a renaissance man...and his musical presence is always memorable..unforgettable. Never ordinary, his contribution to \'Trash Mahal\'is magical and intuitive and ushers the song to the conclusion of it\'s dark journey. ...
