Flautist Nawang Khechog plays achingly lovely music that blends New Age synthesizer with flute timbres that evoke his native Tibet. His work with R. Carlos Nakai and Kitaro show the musician's range and willingness to experiment, yet at the center of MUSIC FOR MEDICINE is a deep stillness and expansive spirit, gesturing to the natural wonders of the Himalayas and the spiritual practices associated with the Zen tradition of the region.
The titles of the album's compositions--"Healing Through Kindness;" "Harmony in Balance;" "Calls of Compassion to Humanity"--reinforce the spiritual consciousness at the center of MUSIC AS MEDICINE. Likewise, the music feels deeply considered and benevolent, with Khechog's perfectly executed flute lines soaring through the atmosphere like birds on the wind. MUSIC AS MEDICINE makes good on its title, and is as beautiful and deeply healing an album of instrumental music as one is likely to find.

| | Dimitri From Paris After The Playboy Mansion CDs (2002)
Music As Medicine
$17.29 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Dimitri From Paris.
Despite emerging from the same fertile late-'90s Paris dance scene that spawned Mirwais, Air, and Daft Punk, Turkish-born Dimitri From Paris's influence can be traced to the late-'70s heyday of house music pioneer Larry Levan. AFTER THE PLAYBOY MANSION affirms this fact, its two CDs packed with a continuous stream of remade classics and vintage nuggets remixed by a who's who of dance music producers. Even though Dimitri tagged one CD "Laidback" and the other "Uplifting," both labels are misleading as all these cuts are packed with solid grooves that grab the listener up regardless of tempo.
Among the far-flung cuts featured on "Uplifting" are De La Soul's breezy, Iberian-flavored "(It Ain't) All Good" featuring Chaka Khan, the jazz flavors of Next Evidence's "The Body Theme," and ...

| | Kurt Mambo Organized Crime CD (2005)
Music As Medicine
$13.45 The infamous Heimorgel-king Mambo Kurt releases his first record on Hit Thing - a compilation of his best ever rock classics cover versions. Includs quirky organ cover versions of classic rock hits such as 'Sheena Is A Punkrocker' (The Ramones), 'Hells Bells' (AC/DC), 'Basket Case' (Green Day), 'Anarchy In The UK' (Sex Pistols), 'The Number Of The Beast' (Iron Maiden) and more. 2005.
"The principle is very simple", as one of Douglas Adams' characters once said. In the case of Mambo Kurt, it is just that: a very simple principle. Sort of. Mambo Kurt and his music, put simply, can be summed up like this: A German feller plus a cheap home organ/beatbox combination covers various hard rock/metal/punk songs in a lounge style. The end. That said, even if other albums and other bands like Grunge Lite and Richard Cheese (and arguable forebear Señor Coconut) have gone down variations of a similar track before. On Organized Crime, Mambo Kurt's collection of covers is worth listening to -- even if only once, as will be the case for most. The selection is both inspired and odd -- nothing wrong with two AC/DC tracks per se, but having one of them be "Thunderstruck" makes for an odd way to kick things off, even if the replication of the guitar solo is a laugh. Kurt's nasal drawl (and occasional wimp-out falsetto) is part of the loving idiocy of this whole thing, but his replication of cover songs amounts to his reduction of the original arrangements, which, of course, brings with it most of the hilarity to be had listening to him. The start of "Hells Bells," for example, is truly ridiculous, while other moments of stupefaction include Turbonegro's "Prince of the Rodeo" turned into a John Barry knock-off -- sort of -- and the nerd-spaz-new wave-dancefloor freak-out for the Cure's "Killing an Arab." At certain points, the massed choral vocals hint at what Laibach might have been, had they been based in Vegas rather than Slovenia. Ultimately, the best performances come courtesy of the ...

| | Viking Moses Crosses / Spenking CD (2005)
Music As Medicine
$15.39 On this co-release from Marriage Records, labelmates the Viking Moses and Spenking present a complementary collection of original folk songs on two records. The Viking Moses is the stage name of musician Brendon Massei, who has toured extensively with Devendra Banhart and Cat Power, among others, and is known for his raucous, energetic live show. This is in stark contrast to the gentle, quiet material on Crosses, a sparse, evocative album which was recorded in a bar in Chicago where Massei was working. The album itself tells the story of a love between the singer and "Emma," with whom Massei says he "fell in love on the railroad tracks." The beauty of Crosses lies in its simplicity. Both the opening and closing songs quote a melody from the Sunday school hymn "Michael Row Your Boat Ashore," and "Little Emma's Smile" brings to mind nursery school rhymes ("I love the buzzing and the honey bee/God made the honey bee and God made me/I leave the sleepy bear where he be/God made the sleepy bear far from me"). This is echoed in the instrumentation: only a toy guitar, an occasional piano, bass, and vocal harmonies were used; most of the power rests in Massei's singing. This simplicity is also a weakness -- it limits the melodies and depth of the lyrics -- but for the most part the album carries ...
