Picture Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Nice - and better than 98% of the crap out there Awesome Beatles-influenced harmonies, intelligently written proggy pop with '80's influences. Don't expect progressive rock - expect well-written pop with a lot of prog influence. Well worth the money. Submitted by panband (Central, VT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great side project A touch of Spock's Beard, a smidgen of Marillion, and even a drop of Asia. One of the best prog rock albums I have heard in a while Submitted by Roger (Montville, NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Wowie, Wow, Wow! First of all, I bought the CD based on the cover art and the name. I'll do that periodically, especially with Inside Out bands. Second of all, it took me about a full week to get into it. After "Loser's Day Parade," it just mellows out and kind of calms down and although it doesn't get better, per say, it most certainly doesn't get any worse. "Loser's Day" is definitely one of the top three best songs I've ever heard, knocking "Rhapsody In Blue" into the four spot. Every single song is put together phenomenally, in a prog-light sort of way, but no less beautiful and simply perfect. If you ever get burned out on death metal and the like, it's a perfect refuge for several months and beyond. Submitted by xailith (Pittsylvania County, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Outstanding! This is a phenomenal release. You'll hear subtle hints of Marillion and Porcupine Tree but with a slightly more "pop" vibe. The songwriting and musicianship are both superb! Chris Maitland's drum skills are mind blowing. There might be a couple tracks that didn't totally grab me but overall this release is a big time winner! Picture album
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.

$17.49 Spock's Beard return to the music stores with their first record since Light in June 2004. The first seven tracks of this album comprise a conceptual suite entitled "A Flash Before My Eyes," based on a story by John Boegehold. It's about the experiences of a man in the process of experiencing a car wreck as it happens and watching his life flash before him as it passes out of him. He recalls everything from his parents' separation on Christmas, to high school football games and meeting his wife and creating a life with her. It all ends at the end of the flash. The overture, "Prelude to the Past," is all big prog symphonic rock Former frontman and guitarist Neal Morse's gigantic presence is still missed, but the ambition here is sweeping. Nonetheless, drummer and frontman Nick D'Virgilio is putting forth the effort and he has a compelling presence as a singer, but his lyrics aren't yet there, they still tell more than show. The contrast between Boegehold's narrative passages and the song lyrics that illustrate them is harsh. The music, while more "accessible" than in the past and harder in its rock-ist intentions, still ...
| | Porcupine Tree Deadwing CD (2005)
Picture songs
$9.75 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is no industrial-rock rip-off. "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" begins with processed backwards guitar, building into a harmony-fueled crescendo before dropping ...
