Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar, National steel guitar, mandolin, harmonica); Tommy Shannon (bass); Red Turner (drums). Adapter: Johnny Winter. Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, National guitar, harp, mandolin, harmonica); Johnny Winter; Tommy Shannon (bass instrument, bass guitar); "Uncle" John Turner (drums); Red Turner (drums). Audio Remasterer: Evren Göknar. Recording information: Vulcan Gas Company, Austin, TX (1967). Photographer: Burton Wilson. Arranger: Johnny Winter. Although his early Columbia albums brought him worldwide stardom, it was this modest little album (first released on Imperial before the Columbia sides) that first brought Johnny Winter to the attention of guitarheads in America. It's also Winter at the beginning of a long career, playing the blues as if his life depends on it, without applying a glimmer of rock commercialism. The standard classic repertoire here includes "Rollin' and Tumblin'," "I Got Love if You Want It," "Forty-Four," "It's My Own Fault," and "Help Me," with Winter mixing it up with his original Texas trio of Red Turner on drums and Tommy Shannon (later of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble) on bass. A true classic, this is one dirty, dangerous, and visionary album. The set was issued in a sonically screaming 24-bit remastered edition on CD by Capitol in 2005. It contains no bonus tracks, but it leaves the original crummy CD issue in the dust. ~ Cub Koda & Thom JurekRolling Stone (4/19/69, p.28) - "...There's an urgency and bite to every track...As an electric guitarist, Winter is explosive, fluid, percussive, and driving..." Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.95) - "...Winter's music speaks for itself. Relying on simple back-up provided by a bassist and drummer, Winter cuts his way through 10 smoking blues tracks..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.114) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[R]aw, basic blues delivered by Winter plus bassist Tommy Shannon....His singing was equally forceful and raw, true to the roots without denying that he was merely a Texan rocker at heart." A man posessed! Johnny is in rare, pure, form playing straight from the soul. This may sound cliche'...however, I have never heard anyone ever play with as much passion as Johnny plays with on this album...by far the greatest he has released. Strong Early Effort from Johnny Previously this was only available on cd as an import. This is the first time on cd in the US. I have the Lp, which I think sounds better, but this cd issue is pretty good too.
Although there are earlier recordings of Johnny, this is generally considered his first real album, and one of his best. I prefer it to his first record for Columbia. He was playing hard blues. Columbia soon tried to put him into a bag he did'nt really fit- rock guitar hero- but he played the part well for a few years before returning to his roots with 1977's "nothing but the blues".
This is a Spontaneous album recorded not long before he was discovered (for that story get Mike Bloomfield/ Al Kooper "Live at Fillmore east").
The raw production makes it sound like a real band playing in a real space, nothing artificial here.
Johnny and the band are in top form throughout, scorching electric blues guitar and some national steel acoustic also. This trio made some great music.
Get this and "second winter legacy edition" and you'll have some of the finest Johnny Winter on disc. Submitted by jwfan (wahington dc) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
