| | Better Than Ezra How Does Your Garden Grow? CD (1998)
Saint-Saens: Piano Concertos No. 1-5
$5.95 Principally recorded at Fudge, New Orleans, Louisiana between January 19 and March 30, 1998.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Better Than Ezra is the kind of band that knows how to go with the musical flow, using their chameleonic qualities to adapt to the changing musical times. They emerged in the wake of Nirvana as post-grunge rockers, full of bad-boy attitude and plangent guitars. On GARDEN they shift gears, embracing the rise of electronica with their newly expanded sonic palette. In place of the rockist beats and Cobainesque vocals and guitar, there's loads of atmospheric, almost trippy synth and a definite trip-hop influence in the rhythm section. Even the vocals are electronically processed on some tunes, for a more cutting-edge sound.
Producer (and Daniel Lanois cohort) Malcolm Burn is surely to thank for helping develop the sound here, which includes a guest horn section, string arrangements and plenty of non-electronic keyboard work (mostly by singer Kevin Griffin). Those who thought Better Than Ezra were just Nirvana wannabees will be presently surprised by the sonic left turn of HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?, while those who appreciated the band's musicality all along will have their faith confirmed.

| | Blind Melon CD (1992)
Saint-Saens: Piano Concertos No. 1-5
$8.85 Given the preponderance of synthesizers and samples on contemporary radio outlets, fans of guitar bands must be feeling a little let down, when along comes a Blind Melon. BLIND MELON puts a contemporary slant on metal, blues and assorted psychedelia without sounding lost in the past. Nevertheless, their deep roots in classic FM sounds help define their appeal, not unlike that of a Pearl Jam.
Vocalist Hoon howls at the moon in the best tradition of Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne and Axl Rose, while the Glen Graham-Brad Smith rhythm team moves convincingly from rock thrash ("Paper Scratcher") to funk ("Seed To A Tree") and ...

$14.69 | | Dave Brubeck Live With The Lso CD (2002) (Import)
Saint-Saens: Piano Concertos No. 1-5
$17.49 This is a rather unique release by Dave Brubeck because it features the veteran pianist/composer with four of his sons, saxophonist Bobby Militello, and bassist Alec Dankworth, along with the London Symphony Orchestra in a concert played not long after his 80th birthday in December 2000. Unlike many jazz meets symphony affairs, this is a truly integrated effort that succeeds very well. Brubeck arranged "Chorale" (a powerful classical work primarily featuring the strings); Darius Brubeck, who is also featured on piano, contributed the arrangements for both "Summer Music" and "Blue Rondo à la Turk," demonstrating considerable skill in his writing for strings, as well as an original dedicated to his father, the tense and occasionally rockish "Four Score in Seven." The pianists' late brother, Howard Brubeck, scored the ever-popular "In Your Own Sweet Way" (a feature for Matthew Brubeck's lyrical cello) and the moving "Brandenberg Gate Revisited." Chris Brubeck (heard on both bass trombone and fretless electric bass) arranged the snappy "A Salute to the Count," which briefly touches upon several pieces associated with Count Basie, and also the catchy "Unsquare Dance," a longtime favorite which he plays when leading his own groups. The inevitable "Take Five," arranged by conductor Russell Gloyd (Brubeck's longtime manager), leads off with Bobby Militello's exuberant alto sax before giving way to the patriarch of the Brubeck clan and wrapping with youngest son, Dan's climatic drum solo. All of the musicians are in top form; this memorable concert is well-worth acquiring. It is available through www.brubeckmusic.com. ~ Ken Dryden
