Personnel: Johnny Coles (trumpet); Johnny Coles; Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Bob Cranshaw (double bass); Leo Wright (flute, alto saxophone); Duke Pearson (piano); Pete La Roca, Walter Perkins (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Duke Pearson; Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (07/18/1963/08/09/1963). Photographer: Francis Wolff. Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really functioned as leader. The typically impressive Blue Note lineup (which includes Leo Wright on alto and flute, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and either Walter Perkins or Pete LaRoca on drums, in addition to Coles and Pearson) handles the obscure material with creative invention. Most memorable are the catchy title cut and the somber ballad "So Sweet My Little Girl." Cole's brittle trumpet is the lead voice throughout, although the young Joe Henderson was already instantly recognizable. ~ Scott Yanow Although this Blue Note session (reissued on CD in 1996) is led by trumpeter Johnny Coles, pianist Duke Pearson (who contributed the arrangements and five of the six compositions) really functioned as leader. His sound, without vibrato yet loaded with emotion, and his crisp articulation distinguish him....Coles was, and is, one of a kind. This reissue helps to make that quite clear." | | Karen Gallinger Live At The Jazz Bakery CD (1994)
Little Johnny C
$13.49 Recorded live at The Jazz Bakery, Los Angeles, California on March 6, 1994. One of Southern California's more active jazz singers, Karen Gallinger makes her recording debut with a live performance at the famous jazz watering hole, the Jazz Bakery. The "active" as it applies to Gallinger means not only the number of gigs she plays, but the way she prances on this album. Upbeat, loose, and definitely hip, Gallinger shines as she delivers a play list of ten tunes, mostly familiar standards she infects with a large dose of freshness. The centerpiece is a seven-minute romping of "The Song Is You." Not only does Gallinger take this tune on a hair-raising vocal roller coaster ride, it's also one of the frequent ...
