Personnel: Tina Brooks (tenor saxophone); Tina Brooks; Sam Jones (double bass); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Duke Jordan (piano); Art Taylor (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Authors: Ira Gitler; Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/25/1960). Photographer: Francis Wolff. Although a four-LP Mosaic box set purportedly includes every recording led by the obscure but talented tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, this 1994 CD has previously unreleased alternate takes of "True Blue" and "Good Old Soul" that Mosaic overlooked. Brooks is teamed with the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard (on one of his earliest sessions), pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Art Taylor for a set dominated by Brooks' originals. None of the themes may be all that memorable ("Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You" comes the closest), but the hard bop solos are consistently excellent. ~ Scott Yanow Although a four-LP Complete Blue Note Recordings box set on Mosaic purportedly includes every recording led by the obscure but talented tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, this 1994 CD has previously unreleased alternate takes of "True Blue" and "Good Old Soul" that Mosaic overlooked. Finally, Blue Note reissued the CD in 2005 as part of its Rudy Van Gelder Editions series, and it features sparking, near crystalline sound. The bonus tracks included on the original CD issue are also present here. ~ Scott Yanow & Thom Jurek
Tina Brooks True Blue Songs True Blue Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) hard bop at its best tina brooks, an underrated tenor who died at an early age, had a small library of recordings, 4 blue note dates as a leader. true blue is the most outstanding of these dates. this is an essential recording for those dedicated to the post/hard bop era. accompanied by stalwarts freddie hubbard (in his late teens, prior to leading any recording dates of his own), duke jordan, sam jones, and art taylor, the recordings are consistently first rate and original. highly recommended Submitted by andrewgdavis (pensacola, florida, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Recording information: New York, NY; Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist ...

The Checkers: Bill Brown, Little David Baughn, Charlie White. Here's another "just what the title says it is" compilation from the fine archivists at the Ace label, presenting all 26 of this obscure R&B vocal group's recordings. In addition to both sides of all ten of their King singles, it has four previously unissued alternate takes, as well as two takes of the previously unreleased "Friend in Need." A minor-league Dominoes and early Drifters vibe permeates the proceedings, as befits an act that included some members of those groups. Still, minor league doesn't always mean useless, and these are accomplished early- to mid-'50s doo wop ...
