Forrozao Da Radio Imprensa album
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Forrozao Da Radio Imprensa music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart of the listener ...

| | Cris Williamson Strange Paradise CD (1980)
Forrozao Da Radio Imprensa songs
$13.29 Cris Williamson had quite a task trying to follow up 1975's The Changer and the Changed, the best-selling album in the history of women's music. Strange Paradise came long enough after that to be an independent statement. Unlike some of her peers, Williamson was not much interested in explicit lyrical statements of feminism and lesbianism, and she was at least as interested in the music as she was in the lyrics. So, the songs on Strange Paradise brought in rock & roll and reggae elements, and, working with co-producers June Millington and Jackie Robbins, Williamson constructed pop arrangements that relied heavily on synthesizers, which gave the album a contemporary sound for its day (and made it sound somewhat dated later). The eerie keyboard sounds could add atmosphere, notably on the lead-off title track. And if Williamson's lyrics were not directly political, they could be personal and empowering, giving her, at least potentially, an audience beyond the core listenership of the women's music flagship label Olivia Records. (The album was later reissued on Williamson's own Wolf Moon imprint.) ~ William Ruhlmann
Much to the delight of her many fans, the long out-of-print follow-up to Changer and the Changed is finally available on CD from Wolf Moon Records, ...
