Original Broadway Cast Frogs (Original Broadway Cast Recording) CD (2005)
Boy Friend Soundtrack In his seventies, Broadway songwriter Stephen Sondheim's production of entire new shows may have slowed (only Bounce, which closed out of town in 2003, appeared after 1994's Passion), but the remounting of his earlier works became a torrent in the spring and summer 2004, when the Broadway-affiliated Roundabout Theatre revived both Assassins and Pacific Overtures and the Broadway-affiliated Lincoln Center Theater brought in a heavily revised version of The Frogs. Sondheim and librettist Burt Shevelove had collaborated on this adaptation of Aristophanes' 405 B.C. comedy for the Yale Drama School in 1974, when it was staged in a swimming pool. In 2001, Nathan Lane played the leading role of Dionysus in a studio cast recording that combined the short score with the four songs Sondheim wrote for a 1966 television musical, Evening Primrose. After that, Lane worked with Sondheim to expand The Frogs, adding to Shevelove's book as the composer wrote six new songs. The result opened on July 22, 2004, and played a limited run for Lincoln Center Theater's subscription audiences before closing on October 10. Two days later, the cast assembled for a recording produced by Tommy Krasker, who also had handled the 2001 album. While that version did theater fans the favor of preserving what then seemed like an archival work, this one reinvents The Frogs. The new material includes the hilarious "Dress Big," sung by Burke Moses with Lane, and the equally sidesplitting "Hades," sung by Peter Bartlett. "Invocation and Instructions to the Audience," an original number, has been refurbished; it now includes an admonition about cell phones. As Sondheim does with the music, Lane has sprinkled the dialogue with witty quotes from other sources. But as funny as The Frogs is, it also has a serious and timely message. By the end, when Dionysus has returned from Hades, the characters speak directly to the people of Athens, and it's clear the cast is speaking directly to the people of the U.S. in the audience. It isn't hard to understand that the implied message is that listeners should vote in the 2004 Presidential election, and vote against the incumbent. By the time the album was released in January 2005, five days after the Inauguration, it was too late for that message to be satisfied, but Sondheim, Shevelove, and Lane's The Frogs remained an entertaining and pointed cry for tolerance and peace. ~ William Ruhlmann

New Broadway Cast Recording |
Boy Friend Soundtrack Twenty-one years after its original run on Broadway, Maury Yeston's musical Nine (based on the Federico Fellini film 8«) was revived in essentially similar form, albeit, of course, with an entirely different cast. The story remained that of Italian film director Guido Contini (Antonio Banderas, "Guido's Song"), struggling to make a new film for which he has yet to write the script and at the same time hold together his marriage to his wife (Mary Stuart Masterson, "My Husband Makes Movies") as he is surrounded -- in the present or in his memory -- by a succession of women including his mistress (Jane Krakowski, "A Call from the Vatican"); his producer, accompanied by a film critic (Chita Rivera and Saundra Santiago, "Folies Bergères"); his mother (Mary Beth Peil, "Nine"); his first prostitute (Myra Lucretia Taylor, "Ti Voglio Bene/Be Italian"); and his favorite actress (Laura Benanti, "Unusual Way"). Thus, the score is, to a large extent, a succession of showcases for female singers, and on the cast album they prove to be a capable, if largely unspectacular bunch. Typical is stage veteran Rivera, who convincingly transforms herself into a French woman for "Folies Bergères," without making anyone forget Liliane Montevecchi's Tony-winning performance in the original production. Banderas, who demonstrated his musical chops in the movie version of Evita, brings out some of the appealing humor of Guido that Raul Julia first demonstrated when he created the role, but that Banderas' Evita co-star Jonathan Pryce missed in the 1992 London concert cast recording of Nine. That isn't to say that Banderas is the equal of Julia, however, even if he may have been the best choice available in 2003. (His heavy Spanish accent sometimes makes comprehension difficult, for one thing.) The score, once again sporting Jonathan Tunick's sympathetic orchestrations, has been cut down slightly, with the minor tracks "The Germans at the Spa" and "Waltz from `Nine'" eliminated. The result is a respectable effort that is better than the London concert cast album, but not a patch on the Original Broadway Cast recording. ~ William Ruhlmann

After the Ball (Original London Cast) CD (2005)
Boy Friend Soundtrack The idea of having Noël Coward adapt Oscar Wilde's play Lady Windermere's Fan into a musical seems sound, but as often happens, the resulting show, After the Ball, suffered from problems on its way to the stage that prevented it from being what it might have been. In particular, casting was a problem, as Mary Ellis proved unequal to the vocal demands Coward made in the pivotal role of Mrs. Erlynne, resulting in the elimination of some songs. Along with other difficulties, the result was an indifferent critical and popular response, and the show ran only 188 performances after it opened in London on June 10, 1954. Nevertheless, Philips Records gave it a full cast recording on the only recently conventional 12" LP format, including 16 tracks with a running time of nearly 49 minutes. That, however, still wasn't enough to encompass the entire score, and there was another challenge. Shamus Locke, playing the part of Lord Darlington, was contracted to another label and unavailable to appear on the cast album. His songs, the solo "Stay on the Side of the Angels" and "I Offer You My Heart?," a duet with Vanessa Lee in the role of Lady Windermere, simply were eliminated. So were three other songs, leaving only 14. ("Quartette" is just a reprise of "Oh, What a Century It's Been," and "London at Night" also has a reprise.) The cut songs tend to be ones that advanced the plot, leaving plenty of choral numbers filled with Coward's characteristic wit and some love songs sung by Lee and Ellis. It's still an excellent score, even in this incomplete form, and the troubles of the stage production do not intrude. After half a century had passed and the recording had fallen out of copyright, Sepia Records undertook this unlicensed reissue of the long out of print album, spiffing up the sound and adding as bonus tracks eight songs from earlier Coward shows and/or featuring performers from After the Ball. The highlight of the extras was the three tracks from Pacific 1860, two of them featuring Mary Martin. ~ William Ruhlmann
Based on Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan; with score by The Master Noel Coward and headed by a star-studded cast - Mary Ellis, Vanessa Lee, Peter Graves, Graham Payn, Irene Browne, a who’s-who of the then London stage, it seemed extraordinary that After the Ball only managed 188 performances. Perhaps the combination of Wilde and Coward did not work but the score is top quality and Coward supplied a charming set of lyrics. For bonus tracks we have included performances from three other Coward productions - Graham Payn singing “Matelot” and “Sigh No More” from the revue Sigh No More and selections from Pacific 1860 performed by the stars Mary Martin and Graham Payn. Also included a “live” recording introduced by Coward of Payn singing “In A Boat On A Lake With My Darling” from Ace of Clubs.
Composer/Lyricist: Noël Coward.
Original London Cast: Vanessa Lee, Mary Ellis, Peter Graves , Graham Payn.
Liner Note Author: Rexton S. Bunnett.
