The second volume in Classics Records' chronological survey of the recording career of trumpet player and bandleader Joe Morris opens with his biggest hit, "Anytime, Any Place, Anywhere," which topped the R&B charts in 1950, thanks in part to a fine vocal by Laurie Tate. Tate sings the first eight tunes here, actually, with Teddy Smith, Billy Mitchell, Jimmy Lewis, and even Morris himself taking turns at singing on other tracks on this collection, which brings together Morris' early '50s sides for Atlantic Records (plus the "Travelin' Man" single from Herald Records). Among the clear highlights are the instrumental "Ghost Train," the edgy, relentless stomp of "Watch Out I Told You," a fine vocal duet by Billy Mitchell and Teddy Smith on "If I Had Known," and the marvelous "Travelin' Man," which clearly prefigures rock & roll, a genre Morris would have thrived in had he lived long enough (he died in 1958). "Anytime, Any Place, Anywhere" is frequently anthologized, but as far as dedicated albums are concerned, the two volumes from Classics Records are all there is on CD, with this second volume getting the nod if you can only afford one. ~ Steve Leggett

Mississippi Heat is an entertaining and versatile blues combo headed by harmonica player Pierre Lacocque. Whether playing lowdown blues, occasional instrumentals, blues ballads, or more R&B-ish material, Mississippi Heat is full of fire and passion. In addition to Lacocque (who wrote five of the songs on this set), the band features a fine female singer in Inetta Visor, an intense guitarist in Max Valldeneu, and a fine rhythm section propelled by organist-keyboardist Chris Cameron. On this particular live outing, Lurrie Bell makes guest appearances on guitar and takes two excellent vocals. Chicago blues fans will definitely want to be made aware of both Mississippi Heat and this highly enjoyable CD. ~ Scott Yanow

Another year, another Gary Moore blues-rock album nearly interchangeable with the last. That's no problem for fans or even newcomers, because despite the surface similarities between releases, Moore never seems to be going through the motions for the sake of further bulking up his already substantial catalog. His tough guitar lines remain biting yet classy, and his underappreciated voice is strong and convincing on originals and covers that nail all of the blues-rock bases without sounding rote. While there are no surprises here, Bad for You Baby is far from a disappointment. Moore continues a string of rugged, post-hard rock, power blues that he has carved his niche in since 1990's Still Got the Blues. He applies his throaty vocals and feral guitar to a pair of Muddy Waters tunes to impressive effect. No one will mistake his versions of Waters' "Walking Through the Park" ...
