If I were to select a handful of recordings for a dessert island, this superb (1973) recording of the Kenton Band would certainly be among them. The band was in top form --swinging, exquisite, sharp-- and the English audience lapped it up with repeated sustained applause and cheering, to which the band responded in high style. If anyone ever tells you that the Kenton band didn't swing, have them listen to Bogata or Chiapus or Intermission Riff on this CD. And Kenton's rendition of his theme, Artistry in Rhythm, is alone worth the price of the recording. Never did the band play it so lovingly or movingly as before this fantasically appreciative audience, whose response to the concert was so positive and heartfelt that Stan promised them, right there and then, that he'd be back next year--which promise he fulfilled. Don't miss this one, folks. It belongs in the best annals of jazz recording and you'll find yourself playing it over and over.
