Originally released on Decca. Personnel: Stan Kenton (piano); Kim Frizell, Quinn Davis, Richard Torres (saxophone); Jay Saunders, Mike Vax (trumpet); Dick Shearer, Fred Carter, Joe Marcinkiewicz, Mike Jamieson, Ray Brown (trombone); John Von Ohlen (drums). Liner Note Author: Ken Hanna. Recording information: London, England. Unknown Contributor Roles: Chuck Carter; Phil Herring; Mike Wallace; Willie Maiden. This double LP with its lengthy liner notes does not give a complete listing of the personnel of Stan Kenton's 1972 orchestra; an unintentional but ironically understandable omission because Kenton's young band had few original personalities at this point. Other than veteran Willie Maiden (heard here on baritone), the soloists are at best semi-obscure. However, the musicianship is flawless and the repertoire for this Stan Kenton Today set is dominated by old classics including "Malagueńa," "Intermission Riff," "Interlude," "Artistry in Percussion" and naturally, "The Peanut Vendor." Fans of college stage bands should enjoy this spirited music. ~ Scott Yanow Stan Kenton Today Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Kenton at his best If I were to select a handful of recordings for a dessert island, this superb (1973) recording of the Kenton Band would certainly be among them.
The band was in top form --swinging, exquisite, sharp-- and the English audience lapped it up with repeated sustained applause and cheering, to which the band responded in high style.
If anyone ever tells you that the Kenton band didn't swing, have them listen to Bogata or Chiapus or Intermission Riff on this CD.
And Kenton's rendition of his theme, Artistry in Rhythm, is alone worth the price of the recording. Never did the band play it so lovingly or movingly as before this fantasically appreciative audience, whose response to the concert was so positive and heartfelt that Stan promised them, right there and then, that he'd be back next year--which promise he fulfilled.
Don't miss this one, folks. It belongs in the best annals of jazz recording and you'll find yourself playing it over and over.

There's plenty of jangly guitars throughout the tunes, and fans of Sun 60, Mary Lou Lord, REM, the Feelies/Wake Ooloo and Grey Eye Glances will all find something appealing in the Shellycoats' contemporary brand of folk-rock music." -Eric Sorensen, www.fufkin.com"Listening to The Shellycoats is like a trip down memory lane...The Shellycoats make me long for the long lost days of alternative music" -Greg Yost, Music Monthly (www.musicmonthly.com)""...an indie-folk atmosphere that shimmers with a noisy grace and an insistent pop rhythm...For fans of R.E.M. and [10,000 Maniacs] early moments of textural introspection..." -Brian Baker, Amplifier Magazine #41"Great mixture of slow, mid and uptempo songs, great guitar work and intelligent lyrics.
