Recorded Live At The Desert Inn, Las Vegas, Febuary 6, 1971. Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks. Personnel: Bobby Darin (vocals); Bobby Darin; Terry Kellman (guitar); Billy Aiken (piano); Quitman Dennis (bass guitar); Tommy Amato (drums). Audio Remixer: Russ Terrana. Liner Note Author: Ken Smith. Recording information: Hitsville U.S.A. Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA (02/06/1971); Motown (02/06/1971). Editor: Russ Terrana. Ensembles: The Jeannie Thomas Singers; Carleton Hayes Orchestra. Arranger: Quitman Dennis. In the early '70s, Bobby Darin had discontinued his infamous "Bob Darin" billing, but he was still interpolating the best of the late-'60s folk and singer/songwriter scene into his live act -- this despite playing to the mostly middle-aged, craps-playing audience assembled at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas for an early 1971 run. Darin had more than a decade's worth of hits to reprise for the crowd, and he did so happily, from "Mack the Knife" to "If I Were a Carpenter" and even including "Splish Splash" (as part of a rock and soul encore). But beyond not wishing to begrudge a fandom that had been left behind by the era of progressive rock, Darin most certainly did his best to entertain and enlighten his regular concert attendees -- musically, socially, and even politically -- without worrying about the blowback from his largely conservative base. It also earned him enmity in progressive circles as a faker, although with his performance Darin makes it clear that he has nothing to apologize for. After all, he was, at heart, a showman pure and simple. He starts the concert with an urgent plaint from the pen of Laura Nyro ("Save the Country") and, after inserting "Mack the Knife" as a sop to his fans, returns to the singer/songwriter crowd with James Taylor's "Fire and Rain." A Beatles medley appears halfway through the set, as does Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" and Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," all of them performed with too much reverence, but also a fine ear for what made those songs examples of great American pop. [Live! at the Desert Inn was projected to be Darin's first album release for Motown, and although it was pressed or planned twice (once under the present title, once as Finally), it was shelved until it finally appeared in 1987 (on Motown) and again in 2005 (on Concord), the latter with several bonus tracks.] ~ John Bush

JazzTimes (p.113) - "[T]he chameleon-like crooner successfully resurrected his career in the early '70s by serving up the folk tunes and soft-rock ballads he'd grown to love in slick Vegas packaging." Live! At The Desert Inn Music Bobby Darin Live! At The Desert Inn Songs Live! At The Desert Inn Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Look out ol' Macky's back A very good recording of a somewhat
underated, and almost forgotten artist.
It truly spotlights the talent and giving Bobby Darin gave to the audience
and his performance, and of the great
range of his professional career. His
tribute to those boys from Liverpool only highlight his shortlived and stolen
demise from the recording world. Five Stars plus and the only thing better would be a video of him performing.

A Reminder of Darin's Greatness Surprisingly, Bobby Darin left few recorded live performances behind. This gem, from 1971, has Bobby at his best. It was recorded after he had explored several phases of musical growth, each different from the other. There is the obligatory "Mack the Knife," but with a new orchestration; a great segue from "Splish Splash" to "Johnny B Good," a soaring "Higher and Higher", a lovely Beatles' tribute, and a few other tunes you might not associate with this versatile musician. You'll also hear a little of him on harmonica, acoustical guitar, and piano. Bobby had lost none of his powers when this live show was recorded, but to go with the rock 'n roll there is a fine, simple rendition of Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and Darin's own hit, "If I Were a Carpenter." He simply was one of the most soulful white performers who's ever been. It's remastered, and the recording quality is fairly good. He's backed by a solid big band and a Raelettes-type group of singers. If you loved Darin, this is a surefire CD for you. Submitted by donpaul0 (Buffalo, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nothing tops Bobby Darin live! This album was recorded in 1971 when Bobby Darin was at his height of live performance powers. He dazzles the Vegas audience with an incredible array of musical styles, including lively versions of old favorites such as Mack the Knife and Beyond the Sea (probably the two songs most closely identified with Darin in his lifetime) as well as a beautiful medley of Beatles tunes, plus wonderful versions of work from Laura Nyro, James Taylor and Bob Dylan. Darin moves through all of these styles with ease and authority. The music and backup singers are kicking, and Darin himself is at the top of his form. What the public did not know at the time was that these recordings were made shortly before Darin underwent surgery to replace two heart valves damaged from childhood bouts with rheumatic fever. He did not expect to survive that surgery, which gave him two extra years of life, and his performance here and choice of material are made all the more poignant for this knowledge. It is great to have this material available again both for long-time collectors of Darin's work and for younger audiences just beginning to learn about the stunning versatility of this incredible entertainer. $22.09 For 2005's ARMED LOVE, Sweden's International Noise Conspiracy pulled off quite a coup. Not only did the noisy, politically-oriented garage band sign to Rick Rubin's American label and get the bearded guru to produce the album, but they also enlisted revered keyboardists Billy Preston and Benmont Tench to fill out the record's sound. While the presence of Preston and Tench is prominent, these high-profile guests never overshadow the amped-up proceedings, which are driven by sharp guitar lines, propulsive rhythms, and rousing choruses. The result is an assured and accessible outing that aims to both rally the world's youth and ensure that they dance with wild abandon. Armed Love is the (International) Noise Conspiracy's step into the big time, boasting an expansive Rick Rubin production and cameos from Billy Preston and Benmont Tench (made necessary by the departure of organist Sara Almgren). The indie purist can't help but fear that the sky has fallen, and while it does seem a long way from their Swedish hardcore roots to working with the wrong kind of Heartbreaker, once you get over the slightly glossier surface, Armed Love is still a great rock & roll record ...
