After years of little activity, the Bone Thugs-N-Harmony family returned with a vengeance in 2004 and 2005. Following releases by Bizzy and Krayzie, the Bone Brothers (Bizzy and Layzie), and a Bone Thugs greatest-hits collection, Layzie Bone unveiled his long-awaited solo debut, IT'S NOT A GAME. Layzie, with his ability to rap slowly or at Twista-level speed with equal precision, may be the quintessential Bone Thugs member, and while the beats on this effort are enchantingly spare, his versatile voice more than fills the space.
Layzie is joined by numerous guest stars on IT'S NOT A GAME, but save Snoop Dogg's distinctive entrance on the hazy "Smokin' on Information," the guests are just dropping by and hanging out, rather than stealing the show. A shining example of this follows the intro, as Layzie plays his rhymes off of the sweet, refined soul croon of Aaron Hall on the creeping "There They Go." Layzie follows with a dizzying Twista collaboration on the pair's paean to their home region--the captivating "Midwest Invasion." (Layzie is from Cleveland, Ohio, and Twista hails from Chicago, Illinois.) It's exactly this mix of slow and fast tracks that makes IT'S NOT A GAME a winning solo outing for the skillful Layzie Bone.

His music could be alternately described as thoughtful, intense, self-deprecating...or just as easily be summed up as comedic or even absurd. Some of his songs even manage to pull off sincerity and absurdity at the same time. Whatever you feel about his songs, his goal is to make sure you feel something. With a pedigree of equal parts heavy metal and classical music composition, Chad laughs and says that he "naturally fell into the singer-songwriter genre". "I decided a few years ago that trying to shout over Marshall stacks, my words were not getting across to the audience...and I was over-singing, trying to hear myself. Once I stepped back and really worked on my voice and my lyrics, the music just opened itself up to me." Having received a degree in music composition from the University of Washington, Chad toyed with the idea of true "composing", but kept coming back to his acoustic guitar instead. "The stripped-down presentation of just voice and guitar really seems to suit my songs better than a lot of over-the-top orchestration", Chad explains. "Sure, I could write a string quartet, but it wouldn’t be able to communicate my true nature. I take a lot of inspiration from artists like Elvis Costello and Ben Folds who don’t need to hide behind effects or layers ...
