(1 Customer Review)
Following up their ambitious 2003 debut just two years later with this similarly complex, challenging set, Australia's Architecture in Helsinki established themselves as purveyors of tongue-in-cheek prog-rock for people who shudder at the term. Witty lyrics playfully mingle with majestic melodies, voiced on an array of instruments--electronic, orchestral, standard rock--and vocal permutations. The band explores Sparks-infused punkabilly ("The Cemetary"), symphonic cabaret ("Nevereverdid"), slinky pop ("Maybe You Can Owe Me"), and multi-part song cycles that wink as they soar.

In Case We Die
$13.59 Architecture in Helsinki's debut, Fingers Crossed, introduces their very appealing collage of electronic and indie pop. While there are a lot of groups out there mixing these styles, this Australian octet's music stands out, and not just because they use tap dancing as an instrument. Even though the band uses a wide array of sounds, ranging from bass recorder to a host of analog synths and samplers, Architecture in Helsinki have an admirably restrained hand with their sonic arsenal. Most of the album trades in charming pop miniatures like ...

In Case We Die
$13.39 The Decemberists' third full-length release takes the fanciful lyrical subjects and defiantly non-rock musical tendencies of CASTAWAYS AND CUT-OUTS and HER MAJESTY THE DECEMBERISTS and infuses them with the more muscular and electric sound of the 2003 mini-concept album, THE TAIN. The combination provides singer/songwriter ...

| | Meow Meow Snow Gas Bones CD (2004)
In Case We Die
$10.65 The debut from California pop underground tunesmiths Meow Meow begins with the crackling of the radio dial. This has been done before, but instead of trailing off into a pretentious wash of post-rock noise passing for a well-written song, it does the exact opposite. Lush harmonies, a love of melody, and old-fashioned pop sensibilities permeate Snow Gas Bones, bringing to mind alternative rock heroes like the Posies, the Boo Radleys, and Spiritualized. There are hypnotic seven-minute epics ("Finis"), slices of pop perfection ("Sick Fixation"), and delicious balladry on the closer ("Wear You Down"), but -- and this is not necessarily a bad thing -- one would be hard-pressed to find anything truly groundbreaking about the material. What sets the band apart from its mentors, and keeps this retro-tinderbox from exploding, is guitarist Kirk Hellie's heavily processed guitar. He wields it like a matchstick, threatening to burn every sweet, harmony-laden chorus and melodic bridge into a smoldering ...
