Doyle Bramhall's IS IT NEWS doesn't pull any punches: this is Texas blues and R&B and there's no mistaking it. His slim discography notwithstanding, Bramhall's been on the scene in Texas for decades, writing for and playing with all the greats, including Stevie Ray Vaughan. That Bramhall's underground legendary status is so slimly represented on disc is all the more reason to celebrate IS IT NEWS.
The smooth, slick production manages to be both retro and contemporary at once, fleshing out the sound on the full-tilt rocker "Big" or the country-inflected love song "Ooh Wee Baby." Bramhall folds in swamp boogie, Bo Diddley grooves, New Orleans R&B, soul, and straight rock, but with a sense of purpose and taste that makes it all come together. Like their Native American ancestors before them, the members of Blackfoot must have known what it felt like to be exiled from their homeland. Only, rather than being forced into an Indian reservation, the world's first all-Native American hard rock band found itself trying to scrape together a good wage across the pond, where U.K. audiences couldn't seem to get enough of its uniquely metallic, Skynyrd-derived Southern rock.
