Since John Doe left active duty with X, he's released a series of solo albums that, in a variety of different ways, have drawn many listeners to the same conclusion -- he's still a superb singer and a strong songwriter, but there's just something missing from his work on his own, which lacks the force and resonance of his music with X. It isn't necessarily tied to the fact that he doesn't rock as hard, given how powerful his work was with X's acoustic side project, the Knitters, and it shouldn't be a matter of not having good collaborators, as Doe's 2005 solo set, Forever Hasn't Happened Yet, boasts an impressive set of talented guests. Longtime colleague Dave Alvin adds guitar and vocals to three cuts, Neko Case contributes a strong and sexy backing vocal on "Hwy. 5" (co-written with Exene Cervenka, and not coincidentally the most X-like song on board), Grant Lee Phillips lends splendid harmonies to "Twin Brother," the criminally underappreciated Cindy Lee Berryhill shines on two songs, and Kristin Hersh sounds like a force of nature on "Ready." Doe himself sings beautifully throughout, and there are a few top-shelf songs here, especially the evocative "Twin Brother," the graceful "Your Parade," and the bitter charge through "Ready." But ultimately, too much of Forever Hasn't Happened Yet is made up of songs that don't quite hit their target, either musically or emotionally; it's full of fine moments, but doesn't cohere into a solid whole, though most of it is good enough to keep hope alive that Doe will bat 1.000 next time he heads into the studio. ~ Mark Deming

Uncut (p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Veering from odd punk riffs to soaring harmony pop to bruised country country blues, Doe's singing has never been better." Mojo (Publisher) (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 - "This, then, is a record that is gorgeously sweaty in its simplicity - even when it's aiming at pure heartbreak." From the rock\'n\'roll version of \"God Rest Ye Merry Genteleman,\" to a \"So 80s-sounding\" techno rendition of \"Hark the Herald Angels sing, to an orchestral version of \"We three kings,\" each song is unique. | | Golden Bough Christmas In A Celtic Land CD (2008)
Forever Hasn't Happened Yet album
$11.49 An Old World carol states, “Good fortune attend each merry man's friend to do the best that he may, forgetting all wrongs in carol and song to drive the cold winter away.” With that in mind, Golden Bough created a special collection, incorporating Old World Carols and other Celtic songs of Christmas and Winter with their own compositions, written especially for the Yuletide season. Specializing in the traditional music from the seven Celtic nations, Golden Bough has become a popular and in-demand group on both sides of the Atlantic. Margie Butler, Paul Espinoza, and Kathy Sierra perform on an array of acoustic instruments, including Celtic harp, accordion, tin-whistle, violin, viola, mandolin, mandola, guitar, and bodhran (Celtic hand drum), supporting the pristine vocal harmonies that have become a Golden Bough trademark. From the concert hall to the festival stage, Golden Bough has captivated listeners with the magic and beauty of Celtic music since 1980. Annual tours have taken these modern-day minstrels throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Fans and critics alike have expressed their enthusiasm for the performances. The press, on both sides of the Atlantic, has acclaimed Golden Bough’s recordings. In 2001, the St. Andrew Association in Scotland bestowed the Diploma of Honour on Golden Bough in recognition of the remarkable merits of its cultural contribution.Golden Bough performs not only the more familiar music of Ireland & Scotland, but also the lesser-known ...
