Six years after his big breakthrough album, Aquel Que Había Muerto, and a whopping 13 after his debut album, Vico C was an anomaly in the reggaeton and Latin rap world: a veteran. In an industry where even the biggest names and heavy charters have a scant three or four records to their credit, any artist like Vico C with 15 is one of two things, a relic or a legend. One listen to his 2004 release Desahogo with quickly prove one thing, he's no relic. The production, though stylistically current, is head and shoulders above any contemporaries for sophistication and invention. One of the great downfalls of the reggaeton genre is its tendency toward repetition, probably due to its youth. Vico C has variety and depth to spare. Super-clean, sharp reggaeton programming meets the East Coast dirt-sample on several tracks. This is much to the delight of Latino hip-hop fans who have grown tired of the kiddie-pool-deep production that currently rules the market. With hooks that show ingenuity and arrangements to match, Desahogo earned its 2004 Latin Grammy nomination. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
Vico C's new album coupled with a DVD which features the making of the album and tour, photo gallery, biography, Vico C Highlights and "Desahogo" instrumental track.

Desahogo
$11.49 When Daddy Yankee's BARRIO FINO broke out in a big way near the end of 2004, many assumed it was the debut for one of reggaeton's rising stars. Although Yankee spent some of his formative years in New York City, the hometown of his namesake baseball team, it wasn't until BARRIO FINO that he got wide exposure in the United States. In the wake of this success, Universal picked up his earlier release, the excellent LOS HOMERUN-ES.
As he grew up amidst the NYC hip-hop scene (in fact, Nas gave him one of his earliest breaks), Daddy Yankee, not surprisingly, stresses the rap aspect of reggaeton. The infectious hook of the opening track, "Intro/Segurosqui," could fit in on a Lil Jon song (Yankee would later collaborate with the crunk king) and ...

$15.89 On PRICELESS, Frankie J's follow-up to his 2005 breakthrough album, THE ONE, the Latino vocalist presents another potent set of hip-hop-laden R&B. With his smooth voice and immediately catchy tunes, the singer (aka Francisco Javier Bautista) confidently mines the same pop-tinged stutter-funk terrain as Justin Timberlake and Usher, particularly on "That Girl," an infectious, beat-driven single that features the rhymes of rapper Chamillionaire and the production of Mannie Fresh. For those disappointed that the former Kumbia King focuses on English-language ...
| | Juan Luis Guerra La Llave De Mi Corazon CD (2007)
Desahogo
$10.95 Juan Luis Guerra gained considerable artistic and commercial stature throughout the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s. Guerra and his band 440 have experimented restlessly over the years, blending musical styles from their native Dominican Republic, such as bachata and merengue, with African-influenced sounds, jazz, R&B, salsa, folk, rock, and commercial pop. LA LAVE DE MI CORAZON (2007) is ...
| | El Cantante DVD (2007) Widescreen; DTS Sound
Desahogo
$8.79 Based on the life of salsa legend Hector Lavoe, director Leon Ichaso's EL CANTANTE, follows the beloved Puerto Rican performer (played by Marc Anthony) as he moves to New York City, and rises through the Bronx's vibrant Latin music scene during the 1960s and '70s. Singing with popular trombonist/bandleader Willie Colon (John Ortiz), Lavoe goes on to a successful solo career, but along the way, he becomes a drug addict, sabotaging not only his music, but his relationship with Puchi (a.k.a. Nilda Roman, portrayed by Jennifer Lopez).
Helmed by Ichaso (PINERO) with documentary-like realism, and carried by Anthony, who bears a striking (albeit thinner) resemblance to Lavoe, EL CANTANTE thoughtfully depicts the rise and fall of a remarkably talented vocalist unable to shake debilitating addiction. Husband and wife in real life, Anthony and Lopez reveal a convincing chemistry, and the movie bolsters the Puchi role to give J. Lo more screen time, an aesthetic decision than allows her gentle-yet-determined presence to play off of Anthony's troubled Lavoe. While off-stage drama receives its share of attention in EL CANTANTE, the film also wisely shines the spotlight on ...

| | Kevin Meisel Coal And Diamonds CD (1998)
Desahogo
$13.15 Kevin Meisel is a lyricist of extraordinary gifts, painting his tales of small town tragedy with provocative imagery and fascinating character studies, although he can send the listener running for a dictionary ("barcarole," "tule"). Musically, he's on the folksy side of alt-country, with his picked acoustic guitar at the center of the arrangements, occasionally augmented with fiddle and mandolin (only two tracks have drums and bass). His smoky voice has a small range, but he wisely writes melodies that make the most of its expressiveness. When the words and music come together on the best cuts, there are some brilliant moments with inspiring choruses and chilling verses ("Red Moshannon," "Trainwreck at Cajon Pass," "Little Magnolia"). On the other hand there are a couple tuneless forays into Nebraska territory ("Tethered Angels") and the embarrassing half-in-Spanish "Seeds I've Sown." The high points are well worth listening to over and over, and anyone who has an interest in contemporary folk should make this a priority. ~ Steven Knowlton
Kevin Meisel's debut recording delivers what its title seems to promise: a rich and compelling look into the polarities of the human heart and its journeys toward truth and redemption. Eleven songs, sparsely orchestrated and soulfully performed, highlight Kevin's penchant for writing powerful, contemporary narratives ebbing with detail and reveal a singer of heartfelt compassion for the human spirit and its wanderings.Coal and Diamonds is an earthy blend of acoustic instrumentation, haunting melodies and darkly beautiful singing that recalls the intensity of Bob Dylan, the plaintive yearning of Gene Clark, the acoustic Springsteen and the gentle wit of John Prine. Still, with original voice and vision, Coal and Diamonds will touch both nerve and spirit alike."Kevin Meisel's songs evoke the rich, dark, rocky texture of the landscape itself, His characters reveal through their hardships, victories and revelations the complex nature of humanity itself as it furrows within the architecture of a life in the process of being lived. His melodies are haunted: his phrasing is hunted and his voice carries the depth and dimension of each story he turns over and over, like dirt being tilled to discover the meaning inside."- Thom Jurek, Detroit Metro Times"This is an astonishing debut from a Detroit born son of a Big Band musician. Mostly recorded at his home studio in Belleville, Michigan it has echoes of Springsteen's Nebraska running through it like a coal seam. However it is the first record of John Prine, also produced in his mid-twenties, that bears closest comparison. Red Moshannon starts the disc off very much like Prine's Paradise or a folkier Dwight Yoakum with its opening line 'Down in the Appalachian coal basin...'. Behind This Veil has a Springsteen The River era story line over a bright organ melody. Other stand-out tracks include the literary influenced Rock Springs (if Richard Ford could sing it would sound like this!) and Fourth of July with its wonderful hunting imagery. This is the old Voice of America that could be heard on tracks like Paradise, Ballad of ...
