Although Rodell Schreir is probably not a household name, easy listening connoisseurs may recognize his pseudonym: David Carroll. He played an integral role as Artists and Repertoire (A&R) director of Mercury Records during the '50s and '60s and his notable credits include producer of the Diamonds, the Platters, Vic Damone, Sarah Vaughan and the Smothers Brothers' best-selling comedy LPs. Additionally, he was the leader of an orchestra that cut in excess of two-dozen LPs, that are decidedly tame by 21st century standards. That said, his Let's Dance (1958) and its follow-up Let's Dance Again (1959) were considered revolutionary at the time as an early full-stereo recording. While Carroll's scores of popular tunes are comparable to that of Enoch Light, they lack Light's overt novelty. Rather than focusing primarily on percussion, Carroll incorporates the full ensemble. The style is typical of the 'space age bachelor pad' sound of the era, yet there are a few numbers that stand out from the rest. The Old West-flavored "Armen's Theme" was penned by Chipmunks originator Ross Bagdasarian and retains the jaunty feel evident in "The Chipmunks Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" and "Alvin's Harmonica." "A Gliss to Remember" is an interesting find as one of the cuts to feature Elmo Tanner (whistling). Tanner's contributions as a soloist can be heard on the earliest of two versions of Let's Dance issued circa 1957/1958. The second edition was significantly different on the six selections prominently including Tanner, as they had been either re-recorded or remixed, ultimately resulting in his removal. That anomaly aside, the album peaked at an impressive number 21 and set the stage for the even more successful Let's Dance Again. ~ Lindsay Planer

Although David Carroll's string of easy listening orchestrated LPs in the '50s and '60s garnered him a reputation as a top-shelf arranger, he was concurrently working behind the scenes as the head of Artists and Repertoire (A&R) at Mercury Records, producing early rock & roll classics by the Diamonds, the Platters and the Smothers Brothers. After his Top 40 outing Let's Dance (1958), Carroll issued the follow-up, Let's Dance Again! (1960) to an even more enthusiastic reception, climbing all the way to number six during the first week of 1960. Modern consumers will be initially struck by the lightweight scores, conjuring comparisons to typical vintage elevator music. However, the incorporation of discreet stereophonics made Carroll's releases a coup for audiophiles -- whose selection of stereo discs was limited to sound effects and percussion-laden gimmickry. The instrumentalists were assembled out of the finest that Chicago had to offer, including major record studios and the Chicago Symphony. They collectively create what modern ears might regard as simple and ultimately insensate background sounds. But such a generalization dismisses some relatively excellent material, such as the cover of the Russ Conway hit "Side Saddle," the Ol' West ragtime "Hey! Chick," as well as the noir and boppin' "Swamp ...

Let's Dance songs

Percy Faith recorded these two albums, Koga Melodies (1970) and Ryoichi Hattori Melodies (1972), expressly for the Japanese market, and neither has seen domestic release until now. The albums feature Faith's arrangements of music by two Japanese composers, Masao Koga and Ryoichi Hattori, both of whom integrated elements of Eastern and Western music into their pieces: Koga blended popular song styles while Hattori mixed jazz with traditional Japanese music. Although Faith was experienced in adapting and interpreting music from around the world, his complex and meticulous orchestral arrangements are firmly rooted in Western traditions, which makes these two albums very accessible to Western listeners who have no particular familiarity with or understanding of Eastern music. Koga's "Yawara (Softly)," for instance, is based on a strongly rhythmic two-chord guitar riff over which layers of strings play lazy, vaguely Eastern-sounding melody lines. The strong rhythmic orientation throughout is characteristic of the "Beautiful Music" radio format of the '70s, which superimposed light, flowing string melodies over snappy or gently pulsing rhythms. Faith's imaginative orchestrations and exotic source material combine to create something moody and subtle enough to serve as background music, but interesting enough to reward close listening. The Hattori album is very different from the Koga one, with jazzy melodies and more drama, perhaps as a result of Hattori's history of scoring films. Far from being an esoteric reissue for Percy Faith completists ...

Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped -- version of "Singapore" from 1985's Rain Dogs. Musically, the performances are flawless, as is the sound on this set. The killer stage band includes Vincent Henry on woodwinds and harmonica, guitarist Omar Torres, Patrick Warren on piano and keyboards, Casey Waits on drums/percussion, and Seth Ford Young on bass. There is also a guest appearance by Sullivan Waits on sax and clarinet; Tom plays piano and guitar. Waits decided to ax most of the stage banter from disc one, and instead created a bonus disc in this deluxe package. It is a single 35-plus-minute track called "Tom's Tales," which splices stories and dialogue, reminiscences and spontaneous ...

Radio Tarifa Temporal CD  (1998)

CD $14.95  5 stars Audio Samples
Started around 1990, Radio Tarifa is a Spanish ensemble that has come into its own as a purveyor of pan-Mediterranean musical styles from across time. With a penchant for traditional gypsy pieces from Persia, North Africa, and their homeland, Radio Tarifa provides musical proof of the continuity of gypsy music throughout the world (a fact explicated in the film Latcho Drom with equal effectiveness). For their second release, Temporal, the ensemble concentrates on traditional material from Iberia, with pieces culled from Galician, Andalucian, Castilian, and Flamenco culture. Reflecting the distinctly Middle Eastern influence -- via Moorish culture -- in Spanish music, many of the cuts here feature such Persian, Arabic, and North African instruments, including the tar lute, ney flute, and derbouka clay drum. The group also use Greek and Indian instruments, not to mention both medieval and modern devices like the crumhorn wind instrument, organ, and electric bass. This rich mix is topped off by some excellent vocal performances. Another fine title in the group's ...
