| | Phil Manzanera 801 Live CD (1976) Import; Remastered
Inolvidable music CDs
$10.49 Guitarist Phil Manzanera's jazz-rock side project 801 features Brian Eno, Francis Monkman, and Simon Phillips, among others. In 1976, they recorded the ten-song 801 LIVE, highlighted by "Rongwrong" and "Miss Shapiro."
801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players -- bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson -- are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with "Lagrima," a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering ...
| | Gloria Estefan Greatest Hits CD (1992)
Inolvidable songs
$11.19 Pricipally recorded at Crescent Moon Studios and Criteria Recording Studios, Miami, Florida.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
This German import edition of GREATEST HITS by Gloria Estefan features two bonus songs previously unavailable on the domestic release.
1992's GREATEST HITS puts a cap on Gloria Estefan's biggest period of chart dominance, the period between her pop breakthrough with the Miami Sound Machine's frothy dance-pop hit "Conga" and her biggest solo hit, 1991's "Coming Out of the Dark." That song, alluding to the near-fatal tour-bus accident that sidelined her in 1990, was the deciding point between Estefan's Latin-pop roots and her future as an adult contemporary balladeer, making GREATEST HITS a handy summing up of the first part of her career. Along with four new recordings (including the Jon Secada co-write "I See Your Smile"), GREATEST HITS gathers 10 of Estefan's biggest hits. Although GREATEST HITS gives short shrift to the 1985 breakthrough album PRIMITIVE LOVE, including only the ...
| | Showaddywaddy Red Star CD (1977) (Import) United Kingdom
Inolvidable album
$15.75 Titled for the railroad courier service of the same name (the album's sleeve replicates one of their parcels), Showaddywaddy's fourth album was released on the back of their latest hit, "When," in late 1977. Following in the tradition of its predecessors, Red Star splits its contents between band originals (six of the 13 songs) and the covers which were the staple fare of the band's singles catalog, although it is difficult to say which is which -- a tribute to the strength of both the band's writing and the idiosyncrasies of their sound. That the band had developed into little more than a supercharged revival act can never be disputed. But the revival itself had never taken off in Britain, leaving Showaddywaddy to glory in a field of exactly one. And how they gloried. In keeping with the band's established practice, three of the original album cuts became major hits ("You Got What It Takes" and "Dancin' Party" followed "When" up the U.K. listings), and ...
| | Miriodor Parade + Live At Nearfest CDs (2005)
Inolvidable CD music
$22.25 Everyone loves a Parade -- or at least they should love the CD by that name, the sixth Miriodor disc on the Cuneiform label, released as the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. The title is apt, as listeners are likely to feel as if they are indeed sitting in folding chairs at curbside, witnessing a particularly phantasmagorical array of parade floats roll past. The 16 tunes, ranging from less than a minute to nearly seven minutes in length, are often densely packed with ideas yet paradoxically light in feel, offering up something new for the senses at every turn. The music is both entertainingly accessible and startlingly inventive, filled with more sonic details than can be grasped in a single listen, with the keyboard voicings alone (vibes, marimba, accordion, harpsichord, grand piano, and Farfisa anyone?) causing the listener's head to spin, yet always used in service of the compositions in which they appear. Parade finds the core quartet of guitarist Bernard Falaise, keyboardist Pascal Globensky, drummer/electronician Rémi Leclerc, and bassist/keyboardist Nicolas Masino supplemented, as they were on 2001's Mekano, by saxophonist Marie-Chantal Leclair and violinist Marie-Soleil Bélanger on a number of tracks, adding additional voicings, melodies, and countermelodies to the often intricate arrangements. Miriodor jumps out of the gate with "Pyramide" and "Scarabee," two concise, tight, and quirky tunes, before throwing curve balls at the listener, ...
