Sam Cooke to the contrary, RCA wasn't known as a soul powerhouse in the 1960s, but it did issue its share of recordings in the style. This 24-track compilation doesn't have any hits, although there are little-known outings from Johnny Nash, the Exciters (long after the "Tell Him" days), Roy Hamilton, and ex-Oriole Sonny Til; in fact, about half of it was previously unreleased. A lot of it was produced in New York and Detroit (the Motor City outings largely generated by the Pied Piper production team), and it's largely upbeat, mid- to uptempo, acceptable but unexceptional soul. That's the kind of style, of course, which is so beloved by northern soul mavens, who will want this for the sheer rarity of the material if nothing else. The average soul fan should pass. If you find yourself in between, you may find it useful to know that the better tracks include Lorraine Chandler's gutsy version of "You Only Live Twice" (yes, the same James Bond theme that was a hit for Nancy Sinatra), Hamilton's version of Bacharach-David's "Reach Out for Me," and Nash's Drifters-type ...

Doris Day was not only among the most prodigiously talented singers of the 20th century, but among the most resilient -- that's the only way to explain the worth of this eight-CD set, which encompasses Day's output 20 years after her initial breakthrough to pop stardom. She was obviously no longer on the cutting edge of music in 1960, the year of the earliest material on this set, but she still makes every note count -- indeed, somewhat ironically, she has the toughest time with some of the songs that come from the movies she was making, yet it was those movies that were doing more than anything else to maintain her active stardom. So "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" is a comparative weak point on a CD that includes "Falling" and "The Blue Train." This set has lots of highlights, including the complete contents and outtakes from the finest album of Day's entire career, Duet, a jazz outing cut with André Previn in 1961. But the unexpected highlight is Day's cover of a novelty song by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil entitled "Let the Little Girl Limbo" (represented in both single-vocal and dual-vocal versions), which constituted Day's attempt to pull a Joanie Sommers-type generational shift -- alas, the song went unreleased in either version until this box set. There's well over an album's worth of unreleased outtakes, as well as rehearsal takes and other oddities, on this 197-song compilation, plus a lavishly illustrated ...

As there truly wasn't enough material to warrant a greatest-hits compilation from either House of Pain or frontman Everlast's faux-folk solo career without succumbing to bottom-feeding filler, Rhino had the good sense to combine highlights of the two onto one disc. All of the group's finest moments are in place and sequenced totally out of order. However, kicking things off nicely is the anthem that got the Irish boys rolling in the first place, "Jump Around." It still sounds as timeless and energetic nearly a decade along, as does its follow-up, "Shamrocks and Shenanigans." Everlast's solo career is also well documented with his two chart successes, "What It's Like" and "Black Jesus," both making appearances early on in the release. But the most welcome surprise is the inclusion of the rap-metal prototype "Just Another Victim," a collaboration between House of Pain and Helmet that was originally released on the Judgment Night soundtrack. While the compilation does lull at some points (due mainly to having the biggest hits first), it's a solid collection that is appealing and accessible to the most seasoned die-hard fan as well as the casual listener. ~ Rob Theakston
