Not really a traditionalist, Chalf Hassan nonetheless does a pretty good job of capturing the aesthetic of a location or mood. His oud playing is informed far more by North African influences than Spanish ones (in particular one can hear parallels to the Gnawa gnbri throughout the album). The sound does draw from sources beyond Morocco, with keyboards reminiscent of Algerian sounds and flute pieces reminiscent of Turkish idioms. Still, it's an interesting album, and rousing at the very least. Give it a listen for some nice grooves and a bit of belly dance, not merely with more academic intents. ~ Adam GreenbergDirty Linen (p.91) - "This music is both deeply rhythmic, as one would expect from Moroccan players, and also incredibly texturally rich." Dirty Linen (p.57) - "[The album] has Hassan and an excellent group of musicians showcasing the many varied colors of his country's music....Hassan has preserved both the modern and ancient influences..." | | Don Ho Greatest Hits CD (1969)
Rhythms Of Morocco songs
$6.05 Don Ho's very name has become a veritable punchline. Yet his achievements can not be dismissed as easily as an obvious joke. Few recording artists have been so comfortable in so many genres--Don Ho masterfully handles anything from country to light rock to luau listening. He's almost a Jimmy Buffet from an earlier generation. His version of "Tiny Bubbles" is the standard by which all ...
| | Fabulous Wailers CD (1959)
Rhythms Of Morocco album
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great ...

Rhythms Of Morocco songs
$15.65 All songs written by Carlos Guedes except "Spain" (Chick Corea).
With the popularity of The Gypsy Kings and the amazin' Ottmar Liebert, this fantastic trio should hit it big. Churun Meru starts out with a fairly mainstream groove, not too fast or dazzling but not too slow or uninteresting either. Carlos plays electroacoustic Venezuelan harp, and the two members ...

| | Govi Your Lingering Touch CD (2001)
Rhythms Of Morocco CD music
$13.25 Many new age artists enjoy choosing generic album titles that convey little about the music they play, but the spirited acoustic guitarist Govi proves the exception to this rule. Titles from his catalog -- Passion & Grace, Guitar Odyssey, and Heart of a Gypsy in particular -- reflect his basic intent to take us to places within ourself with music that's graceful and seductive, gentle but emotionally powerful. This recording draws together ...

| | US3 Questions CD (2005)
Rhythms Of Morocco songs
$13.79 You remember Us3 -- they had a huge club hit in 1994 with their acid jazz appropriation of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island," which they muscled up with modern beats and samples and titled "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)." That single gave the venerable Blue Note label its first-ever platinum album. Subsequent releases made less of a commercial impact, and the original Us3 duo of Geoff Wilkinson and Mel Simpson eventually fell apart. Now Wilkinson is working solo and releasing music on his own label, but his love of classic funk, old-school jazz and up-to-the-minute turntablism remains as strong as ever. Questions is full of strutting hip-hop Cubanisms ("Whatcha Gonna Do?"), jazzy conscious rap ("What Does That Mean?"), slow-simmering Latin funk ("Goodbye"), ...
