| | D'Agincourt: Complete Works For Harpsichord Vol 2 CD D'Agincour / Pechefsky CDS
François d'Agincour's music is almost unknown today, yet his harpsichord works stand comparison with those of his great contemporaries Jean-Philippe Rameau and François Couperin. This recording brings these forgotten masterpieces back to life. D'Agincour's music is both complex and gracious: French harpsichord music at its most subtle, from the grand "Allemande: La Couperin" (a tribute to d’Agincour’s mentor François Couperin) to the playful "Le Colin-Maillard" to the sublime“L’Harmonieuse.†Little is known of d'Agincour's life. A contemporary of J. S. Bach, he worked in Rouen and Versailles and was a highly respected musician holding organist positions at several of the churches in Rouen, including the cathedral that Monet painted two centuries later in his famous series of canvases showing the cathedral at different times of day. This is the second volume of a two-volume set devoted to the complete harpsichord works of d'Agincour, and several of the pieces on this volume are recorded for the first time. The harpsichordist Rebecca Pechefsky performs frequently in the New York area, having appeared at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and in numerous other venues in and around Manhattan, as well as in series such as Music at Morris-Jumel and Bach at Zion. She has also performed at the Boston Early Music Festival, for the Miami Bach Society, and the Harpsichord Center of Southern California. A founding member of Brooklyn Baroque, she has presented little-known works for chamber ensemble and recorded unjustly neglected compositions by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and Elias Brunnemüller. Also committed to new music for harpsichord, Rebecca has premiered works by Mary Inwood, Frank J. Oteri, Louis Pelosi, and Johnny Reinhard. Currently organist at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Glendale, Queens, she lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Erik Ryding, with whom she has coauthored Bruno Walter: A World Elsewhere, winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award. D'Agincourt: Complete Works For Harpsichord Vol 2
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If we could somehow make this/Christmas thing last/By helping a neighbor/Or even a stranger." Musically, the band has taken some traditional Christmas songs ("O Come All Ye Faithful," "O Holy Night," "The First Noel") and mixed in some modern rock mus
| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
D'Agincourt: Complete Works For Harpsichord Vol 2
$10.39 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include "La Voce del Silenzio"; "Dare to Live (Vivere)," a duet with Italian pop star Laura Pausini; "A Te," which features Kenny G on saxophone; "Io Ci Sarò," a David Foster co-write that features Lang Lang on piano; and "Bellissime Stelle." While many of songs compiled on Vivere are no doubt already familiar (if not overly familiar) to Bocelli fans, especially those from Romanza and Sogno, the new recordings are substantial enough to make this compilation a rewarding listening experience for fans regardless of its redundancies. As for neophytes, Vivere is an ideal introduction to Bocelli's classical crosso
