| | Best Smooth Jazz... Ever! CD
This incredibly light, fun, and surprisingly hip two-CD collection from Blue Note uses the term "smooth jazz" in an unexpected way. Rather than referring to the genre, "smooth" refers to the temperament and feel of these sometimes funky/sometimes poppy tracks that are selected from six decades of jazz. Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, and a couple other names could be filed in the smooth jazz section, but Adderley, Baker, and Byrd are too classic for that, and it's easy to imagine the legions of funky Medeski, Martin & Wood fans recoiling in horror over the title's Kenny G. insinuation. In actuality the disc is a whole lot of fun. Most of it is very hip fun and very little of it is wallpaper. The Bobby McFerrin, Ramsey Lewis, and Chet Baker cuts are obvious choices, but the inclusion of Charlie Hunter's smoky version of Roxy Music's "More Than This" is a very pleasant surprise and having such divergent sounds as St. Germain's "Latin Note" and Elza Soares' "Mas Que Nada" in the same collection is crafty cool. Perhaps Sauve Jazz would be a better title for this pleasing collection of refined and relaxing tunes. ~ David Jeffries

Best Smooth Jazz... Ever! album
$38.49 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive ...

Best Smooth Jazz... Ever! CD music
$15.95 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first ...

Best Smooth Jazz... Ever! songs
$9.19 This German import compiles the instrumental work of the Latin rock-jam band, Santana; includes the amazing "Soul Sacrifice" as seen/heard in the movie WOODSTOCK.
Picking out the best instrumentals from Carlos Santana's thirty-year recording career is a daunting task at best, and a fan can certainly find reasons to disagree with some of the choices made in this collection. However, this German release is valuable in bringing together undisputed Santana classic guitar pieces like "Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)," "Samba Pa Ti," "Flor D'Luna (Moonflower)" and "Soul Sacrifice" with lesser known masterworks like "Aqua Marine" and the ...

Best Smooth Jazz... Ever! album
$14.95 Less is more when it comes to Tyft, particularly if the trio heard here is considered part of the Human Feel family tree. Saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo and drummer Jim Black were both in that group, which started in Boston with a somewhat traditional jazz quintet lineup before moving to New York during the '90s and continuing without a bassist. The four members of Human Feel turned this new configuration to their advantage, using the space vacated by the bass as an empty canvas on which their own contributions seemed all the more bold and punchy. Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson, a present-day Black collaborator who hung with the Human Feel boys during his Berklee days, now seemingly carries Human Feel's model of shrinkage even further, and with similarly punched-up results, by eliminating one of the reed voices. But Jensson hasn't merely come up with an even smaller Human Feel. First, that was a collaborative ensemble and this is very much Jensson's project. And as a ...
