There's an inspiring story behind this album: guitarist Yuri Matveyev and violinist Artyom Yakushenko grew up in the Siberian town of Irkutsk, where they were eventually brought together by their obsession with their instruments and their love of a wide variety of music. Their wildly energetic jazz-folk-rock performances earned them enthusiastic audiences (but not much money) in their native region, so they traveled to New York, where an American fan of theirs was also a music industry figure. Despite a rapturous response from audiences in clubs and on the streets of Manhattan, no record deal was forthcoming, so their American friend sold some of his assets and produced the record himself, recruiting such sidemen as clarinetist Don Byron, saxophonist Michael Brecker, and percussionist Mino Cinelu. This album is the result, and it's a delight. From the klezmer-flavored "And Then, Nika..." to the Latin grooves of "Natasha, Havana" and "Indigo Breeze," and from the spare textures of Matveyev's impressive guitar solo "Cagey Bee" (har, har) to the lush beauty of the title track, this is an album that inspires whether or not you know the story behind it. One or two tracks get just a bit long-winded and overblown, but for the most part the music is tight, original, and strangely hooky. All of it is extremely well played. ~ Rick Anderson

When I came across this album, I sort of switched my mental state. This usually happens when you have come to the point where you need something new - it doesn't mean that you stop appreciating anything, but indeed need some leap forward. At this point - even if you are a professional musician - you perceive new ideas by your soul, normally ignoring judgments like "this is a great polyphonic complex-beat music". The two guys from Siberia are those whose music is perceived without such mental efforts. Being rather complex and technical, it gets deep into your soul - be that a cheerful "Outpost radio", uni-cultural "Amoroso" or heart-explosive "Evidence..." - each one in the album is penetrating into its appropriate location in your heart, sometimes even deeper. Speaking, anyway, about the style and some characterizing features, it should be noted that you will find very unique combination of folk music with jazz-rock and fusion. Get this album, and you will definitely develop at least fifteen new images in your mind, vivid and soulful.

James Bennington was born in Columbus, Ohio, May 22, 1970. He was raised in Detroit, Michigan until age nine when his family moved to Houston, Texas. It was there that he began music studies on clarinet, playing the instrument for three years. He switched to drums at the age of fourteen. Though largely self-taught, his education has come from concert and marching bands in Middle and High School, brief formal instruction, countless Jazz and Blues sessions, and work as a sideman and leader. Getting his start in Texas afforded Bennington the chance to play with local veterans such as Blues guitar greats Kinney Abair and Little Joe Washington, saxophonists Seth Paynter and Terrance Tony, guitarists Susan Alcorn and Clayton Diaz, trumpeter Ralph Gill, flutist Bob Chadwick, bassists David Craig and Derrick Lewis, and renowned vocalist Horace Grigsby. In addition to drummer G.T. Hogan and bassist Lawrence Evans, it was also during this period that longtime Billy Harper drummer Malcolm Pinson became a friend and mentor.The other artists Bennington has been privileged to learn from include multi-reedist Chuck Carter, saxophonists Antoine Roney and Bert Wilson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummers Roy Haynes, Ron Enyard, James Zitro, Billy Mintz, and the legendary Elvin Jones.
