Recorded exactly 16 years after the group's 1989 debut, NOT BY MIGHT, NOR BY POWER captures the Mississippi Mass Choir at its prismatic best, still fresh, still lifting its collective voice up to the heavens with the same passion as when it was founded by late gospel legend Frank Williams (the Williams Brothers). It certainly doesn't hurt that the release is driven by another gospel leading light, producer Rev. Milton Biggham, who keeps the ceremonies exciting.
NOT BY MIGHT, NOR BY POWER opens, as it should, on a thunderous note, with the rapturous "One More Day." The choir smartly slows down the pace with a pair of buoyant ballads, "God Is Keeping Me" and "The Next Time, Will Be the First Time," brought to life by the thrilling voices of Marva McKinley and Beverly Crawford, respectively. Biggham reveals the church's connection with its patrons, as he playfully banters about storms with the congregation, predicting strife with a righteous beauty that matches the striking "I'm Still Here." NOT BY MIGHT, NOR BY POWER ends on an inspiring note, as the choir's spiritual advisor quietly tells a story of a near-death experience and a nurse's conversion with an inviting humor and warmth that sums up the charm and the power of the Mississippi Mass Choir.Living Blues (p.50) - "The power of the Mississippi Mass Choir's many combined voices is nicely augmented throughout the set by a solid rhythm section..." An Album One Lives and Works by. This album is off the chain. I play it over and over again on a daily basis. When at work, my day goes by so fast, simply because I am exalted by the lyrics which are so inspiring. This album keeps me high on the power of God. It is not by might, nor by power. I am truly blessed with this album. I recommend this album to everyone. Submitted by ccb3 (Summerville, S. C.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not by might, nor by power is AWESOME!! I have a been a MS Mass Choir fan for a long time and this is absolutely one of their best albums. I personally love "When we get up", "But by my spirit", "If I be lifted up", and "Victory shall be mine". Christi- you are singing that song, girl!!! If you are an avid MS Mass Choir fan, want to hear good gospel music, or want to usher in the presence of God, NOT BY MIGHT, NO NY POWER must be a part of your CD collection. Thanks, Mississippi Mass Choir for continuing to give God the Glory and to know that it is not by might, nor by power, but by the spirit of the Lord that continues to give us grace and mercy. I pray that God will continue to use and exalt the choir higher each and every day. Submitted by cnolen7 (Starkville, MS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Back To The Basics!!!!!!!!!!! Its about time that we got some real gospel music up in here!!! This new album is the best one to date from the choir. We all know that "Amazing Love" wasn't the best from the choir but they made up for it on this one. Each song is worth listing to.It really favors from the 1st album. I really can't pick favorites, but if I have to I would say that "God Is Keeping Me", "But By My Spirit", "I'm Not Tired Yet" and "One More Day" are the main highlights
with guest appearances by Beverly Crawford,James Mitchell, and the return of Rev.Milton Biggham. And of course it wouldn't be a mass choir album with out the choir directress Mrs. Dorcus Thigpen, who had a solo called "That's What He's Done" but wasn't put on the album. Guess You have to buy the DVD for that one. But believe me when I say ,that sista can't sing. She can SANNNNNNNNGGGG! She Brung IT And Brung it hard!!!David Curry and Jerry Smith return as musicians along with new comer, Dominic Thigpen and C.C. Moore. This Is the best album of the decade.GO GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not By Might, Nor By Power album
$8.79 All songs written or co-written by Kenny "G-Love" Greene, except "Ribbon In The Sky" (Stevie Wonder). Contains samples from "Gotta Have It" (Ed O.G. & Tha Bulldogs), and "Impeach The President" (The Honeydrippers).
In 1993, many of the younger R&B singers were looking more and more like rappers. Instead of silk shirts, Armani suites, and other upscale attire, these artists were sporting gold chains, baggy pants, knit caps, sweats, and gym shoes -- in other words, the last things that Luther Vandross or Freddie Jackson would have worn on stage. Take Intro, for example. The urban/neo-soul trio had a hip-hop look, but its self-titled debut album from 1993 isn't rap. Influenced by LeVert, After 7, and Aaron Hall, Intro favors a style of urban contemporary that is smooth and polished yet gritty and earthy. Intro looked like a rap group and went for a high-tech, hip-hop-influenced production style, but the songs themselves (many of which are romantic ballads and slow jams) have a neo-soul perspective. While Intro's first CD never sounds like it was recorded in 1978 or 1981, it does contain elements of the Isley Brothers, the Gap Band, and Stevie Wonder -- the sort of soul and funk heavyweights who helped paved the way for urban favorites like LeVert, Aaron Hall, K-Ci & JoJo, and R. Kelly. In fact, one of the tracks is ...

Not By Might, Nor By Power songs
$8.99 The opening track, "Reign," at first seems a familiar contemporary gospel tune (a la Kirk Franklin), but then the jazzy keyboard lines meld with swirling pop synthesizers for an original touch. On "God Great God," Carr proposes throwing out all denominations (hence "one church") with ardent shouts ...

Not By Might, Nor By Power music CDs
$8.59 In these troubled times, the Almighty could use a good p.r. rep. Michael Crawford, the British star of stage and screen, has eagerly taken on this task with ON EAGLE'S WINGS. Inspired by his days as a "towheaded eight-year-old" singing Latin hymns with his church choir, he teams up with The Saint Olaf Choir and The American Boychoir to lift our spirits. Mixing traditional ("Amazing Grace") and modern ("Joseph's Lullaby") inspirational songs, Michael explores his spiritual and artistic roots and tries to answer the questions we all face on our journey through life. Although he approaches these songs from a very personal point of view, the larger issues touch us all.

Not By Might, Nor By Power music CDs
$13.15 MONUMENT is the 2003, seven-track release by Swedish metallists Grand Magus, including "Ulnafall" and "Summer Solstice."
Well, this is more like it! Swedish stoner rock trio Grand Magus did themselves few favors with their solid but unspectacular 2002 debut, which quietly sank into the general morass afflicting the doom/stoner movement at the time. And when guitarist and singer JB subsequently hooked up with Michael Amott's high-flying Spiritual Beggars, it looked as if Grand Magus were doomed (no pun intended) to vanish altogether, leaving only that one middling release to their name. However, thanks to the incredibly gregarious and liberal nature of the Swedish music scene, here they are -- unexpectedly back with a 2003 follow-up that is quite deserving of its imposing title: Monument. Howling winds and mournful guitar lines introduce album opener "Ulvaskall (Vargr)," which promptly lurches into gear on an Iommi-approved, bent-note riff and fittingly bleak words intoning "I'm damned and I'm cursed forever/Destined to walk this land," over and over again. Ensuing single (yeah right ...
