Chamber jazz arrangements of music by Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Steve Kuhn, Pat Metheney, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans and others, featuring strings and woodwinds. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Personnel: Carlos Franzetti (piano); The Jazz Kamerata; Lawrence Feldman (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Jay Leonhart (double bass). Arranger: Carlos Franzetti. A set of songs written by jazz musicians were arranged for this project by pianist Carlos Franzetti for piano, sax, bass, flute, clarinet, and a string quartet. The results are pleasing if not overly memorable. While the selections are often challenging, the interpretations are more middle-of-the-road and fairly accessible due to the strings. Franzetti and saxophonist Lawrence Feldman take most of the solos and their improvisations are excellent, although the utilization of strings and woodwinds smoothes over some of the rough edges of the compositions, making the results fairly safe if occasionally unpredictable. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.118) - "This is indeed a mood album. It casts a spell and never breaks it." **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. A Super Audio CD player is required to take advantage of the SACD sound technology. $18.49 Various Artists/The Body Acoustic: Andy González (double bass); David Chesky, Giovanni Hidalgo, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer. Personnel: Bob Mintzer (bass clarinet); Randy Brecker (trumpet); David Chesky (piano); Giovanni Hidalgo (congas). Liner Note Author: Chip Stern. Authors: Friedrich Nietzsche; F. Scott Fitzgerald. Editor: Nicholas Prout. Photographer: Bryn Chernoff. The brainchild of David Chesky, this album's collective talents rise to the fore early and often. Although "52nd Street" takes a moment or two to find its niche, Randy Brecker's trumpet recalls Miles Davis backed by a Latin or salsa flavor thanks to the conga playing from Giovanni Hidalgo. The fluidity is its crowning glory, as Bob Mintzer joins the fray on bass clarinet, giving it a low yet sophisticated style. The low-key atmosphere only adds to the luster of the opening song, although Brecker's solo two-thirds of the way in isn't entirely outstanding, sliding up and down the scales with average results. However, the polyrhythmic verve oozing on the catchy and infectious "East Harlem" works brilliantly, while Chesky jumps off into a rapid yet meticulous piano solo prior to Brecker taming the number down. "Bronxville" ensues, but by this time the listener senses this is basically ...

| | Business Hardcore Hooligan CD (2003)
Jazz Kamerata
$11.65 It's street punk, and the lads love it. Veterans the Business return on Hardcore Hooligan with 12 more pint-slinging anthems to the working class and football terraces, rife with gang's-all-here singalongs and clogged with hard-barbed, brutally simplistic punk chording. Within the first four minutes, you're greeted with no less than two bawdy singalongs. "F-U! F-U-C! F-U-C-K! F*CK YOU!" the rousing opening theme, "Hardcore Hooligan," goes, to be ended by the cheers and jeers of the boys at the bar. But that's only the first minute and a half. What about "Southgate (Euro 96)," with its snarky putdowns of Premier League defender Gareth Southgate? The melody to "Lord of the Dance" is hijacked, and the supporters lock their arms and sing, "Dance now wherever you may be/'Cuz he missed the f*ckin' penalty!" The No Mercy for You holdover "Guinness Boys" throws some rollicking pub piano on the pitch, while "Maradona" and "England 5, Germany 1" are muscular and mean-spirited numbers with a large debt to the sloppy pacing of the Sex Pistols. Hooligan's aims are pretty clear then, even before the opening strains of "Viva Bobby Moore" -- there isn't much room for the unit's usual calls for anarchy, unless there's a fistfight with rival footy supporters and you want to put a trash bin through a windscreen. This singularity makes Hooligan a perfect soundtrack for the activities so heartily described within it -- to review, those are drinking, fighting, and watching football -- but rather ineffective for anything else. In fact, without these lusty vices as a thread, ...

| | Marc Antoine Modern Times CD (2005)
Jazz Kamerata
$14.09 How smooth jazz artists sound on-stage and how they sound in the studio can be two very different things. In the studio, many of them dumb themselves down as much as possible in order to get played on American smooth jazz/NAC radio stations; on-stage, however, they don't have to worry about pleasing program directors -- so they are free to stretch, blow, and improvise all they want in front of a live audience. All too often, studio recordings don't begin to reflect what smooth jazz artists are actually capable of -- and in the '90s, guitarist Marc Antoine wasn't above recording schlock, drivel, and elevator music in order to appeal to smooth jazz/NAC stations (1998's Madrid on GRP was perhaps the worst offender). But Modern Times is one of Antoine's better, more substantial studio efforts; the material is surprisingly decent. This time, Antoine (who is heard on both acoustic and electric guitar) gambles with inspiration ...
