| | Wayne Shorter Speak No Evil CD (1964) Remastered
Baltimore CD music
$7.99 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SPEAK NO EVIL includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
SPEAK NO EVIL is a significant recording for two main reasons. Firstly, it is one of the first in a long string of stunning solo sessions by Shorter that showcase both his masterful saxophone abilities and his eclectic compositional style away from the leadership of Art Blakey and Miles Davis. Secondly, it combines members of the three mightiest ensembles of the period; Freddie Hubbard and Shorter worked together in Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter formed three fifths of Miles Davis' legendary quintet and Elvin Jones was the drumming powerhouse behind John Coltrane's famous group.
Shorter introduces the session with the swinging "Witch Hunt," a dynamic piece with many unexpected twists and turns. Later, the mysterious "Dance Cadaverous" is a peaceful waltz that slowly unfolds its meandering ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Dreamland CD (1996)
Baltimore music CDs
$8.55 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux's soulful voice is occupied so palpably by the spirit of Billie Holiday that it's almost scary. Peyroux is certainly influenced by the song and voice of Bessie Smith as well, but she approaches the material on her major-label debut from an entirely modern perspective, with strength and individuality as well as a hint of playfulness, like a stylish young woman looking great in a vintage dress.
Peyroux covers such classics as "Walkin' After Midnight," Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose," and Smith's "Reckless Blues" with style and agility, backed by such well-known and expert musicians as jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut and guitarist Marc Ribot. DREAMLAND is buoyed as well by Peyroux's accomplished original songs, the bluesy vocal-Dobro tunes "Hey Sweet Man" and "Always a Use," and the album's dynamic, hopeful title track, DREAMLAND'S most contemporary and upbeat ...

The year 1956 marked a turning point for Sonny Rollins. As a new member of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Organization, he was inspired as much by their ...
| | Nipper's Greatest Hits: The 20'S CD (1990)
Baltimore album
$7.85 Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante (BMG Recording Studios in July 1990).
The 1920s evoke an era of gangsters, flappers, bootleg gin, and a nation gone jazz crazy right down to the raccoon coats. This second entry in RCA's Nipper's Greatest Hits series evokes that era in a big way on this 20-track compilation. While there were jazz recordings by the carload from the '20s, it's the pop tunes that drove the decade, and kicking off with the triple punch of Irving Aaronson & His Commanders' "Let's Misbehave," Gene Austin's "My Blue Heaven," and Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians' "Collegiate" sets both the mood and ambience for this set. Other highlights in this excellent collection include Maurice Chevalier's "Louise," Eddie Cantor's "Makin' ...
| | Gretchen Parlato In A Dream CD (2009)
Baltimore CD music
$12.05 Gretchen Parlato is a rising star in vocal jazz circles of the 2000s who everyone should pay attention to and enjoy. Her singing is pure sterling silver, accented with just a hint of ethnic shadings and a big helping of modern style that goes well beyond standard fare. As alluring, distinct, and mature as her youthful instrument is, she deserves extra credit for choosing some of the most interesting young players who also are ascending to major-league status. Guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke, keyboardist Aaron Parks, bassist Derrick Hodge, and drummer Kendrick Scott are all leaders in their own right, but add bright and inventive accompaniment that perfectly matches the pristinely hopeful sounds Parlato expresses. The music taps from many sources, including a cute vocal variation of Herbie Hancock's funky "Butterfly," Wayne Shorter's "E.S.P." with rain forest imagery, scat, and quirky 6/8 beats, or Duke Ellington's "Azure" in adapted 5/4 time with Loueke's guitar and Hodge in late. Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It" is a pining, crossover, Latin-tinged love song as Parlato sings and Loueke scats and add mouth pops, while Dori Caymmi's skittering "Doralice" is easily representative of expanded tropicalia sensuality. Parks, much ...
| | Henri Texier Colonel Skopje CD (1988)
Baltimore music CDs
$10.85 Recorded in France in 1988 and released in the U.S. in 1995, Colonel Skopje is a good example of what could be described as "post-bop with fusion references." This CD isn't full-fledged fusion; it isn't as consistently rock-influenced and funk-minded as -- just to give two 1980s examples -- Miles Davis' Tutu or Scott Henderson's Dr. Hee. But at the same time, French bassist Henri Texier isn't one of those dogmatic purists who insists on staying away from all things electric. While Texier sticks to the upright bass, the quintet that he leads on this album includes Steve Swallow on electric bass and John Abercrombie on electric guitar; rounding out the lineup are saxophone explorer Joe Lovano (who is also heard on flute) and Italian drummer Aldo Romano. Abercrombie is highly regarded in fusion circles, and he certainly hasn't escaped the influence of rock and funk. With this interesting mix of electric and acoustic instruments, the part European, part American ...

| | Johan Arjansson Gone CD (2009) (Import)
Baltimore songs
$21.45 Johan Ã-rjansson, a 27-year-old songwriter from Falkenberg, Sweden, lives with a great love for music. From early age music has surrounded his person. He once started up as a punk-singer in different constellations during his teen-age revolution.Later on he developed a great love for storytelling. Someone once wrote that listening to Johan is just like imagining Bruce Springsteen and Nicolai Dunger together, over a bottle of red wine. That tells us a little about his great talent. Johan's voice and musicality provides us with a mix of wild and spleeny feelings and it doesn't leave you untouched. Johan creates melodies that is inspired from the seventies country-pop-rock ...
