Singles Collection album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. Otis' first act as a recording bandleader was to borrow Jimmy ...

| | Doom CD (2005) Clint Mansell
Singles Collection album
$15.35 Doom revolutionized the first-person-shooter gaming concept. But Doom also meshed sci-fi, horror, and explosive firepower, meaning it only needed to add snakes and bikinis to fascinate whatever percentage of the male population it didn't already control. (Doom: The Leisure Suit Larry Edition....) It was only a matter of time until the franchise followed Resident Evil into the movie marketplace, and who better to star as the game's lone Marine than wrestler-turned-surprisingly-spry action star the Rock? The business plan is brutally, ingeniously simple. Hideous Demons + The Rock + The Rock laying badass People's Elbow/chain gun smackdowns on Hideous Demons = teenage boy $$$. Musical accompaniment isn't primary in that equation; it only needs to provide an adequately loud throb. Clint Mansell's score for the film does that, ...
| | Sterns Sinners Stick Together CD (2007)
Singles Collection CD music
$12.39 British pop and politics have long been intertwined, but the rise of AOR in the '60s created a split in the States, with AM's pop rarely moving beyond candy fluff for the mind, while rock-orientated FM delved into more serious subjects. The Sterns, however, are determined to bridge that gap once and for all. Sinners Stick Together, the quintet's second album, is awash in bright and breezy pop music, and drenched in infectious, hook-laden choruses, effervescent melodies, chirpy harmonies, and bouncy rhythms. Like all the best pop bands, the Sterns' songs sound immediately familiar, yet never to the point of suggesting rip-off. The group's music echoes the past, it glistens like the '60s, but for every nod to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the ...
