Burn The Flags music CDs
$14.05 Recorded in 2000 during the band's Clayman tour, this hourlong live CD -- consisting mainly of songs from the Clayman, Colony, and Whoracle albums -- gives a good idea why In Flames has earned such wide appeal among metal fans. They're heavy and intense enough to satisfy a good portion of death/black metal listeners, but they also have a melodic flair and a general old-fashioned metal spirit likely to resonate with people more at home with bands like Iron Maiden or Rainbow. And while singer Anders Fridén's raspy, shouted vocals are mainly expressions of anguish and personal pain, these feelings are offset by the hopeful and often triumphant tone of the guitars. Plus, the band has written some great songs over the years, among them such set list highlights as "Behind Space," "Jotun," and "&Clayman." Jesper Strömblad and Björn Gelotte's tag-team guitar work shines throughout, especially on the harmonized dual-lead sections, and the overall performances are tight and energetic. In addition, the sound is clear ...

Burn The Flags songs
$10.49 This Limited version of BELIEVE is packaged in a leather-bound book, accompanied by a companion bonus DVD disc.
Taking the essence of classic metal and making it contemporary is a feat that Disturbed has accomplished with staggering results. While the band's debut only toyed with melodicism (much of THE SICKNESS was derivative of the growing stable of rap metal bands), BELIEVE is Disturbed's musical arrival. Razor-sharp syncopated riffing is melded with rock radio-friendly melodic vocals, making a jaw-dropping first impression with album-opener "Prayer." The track has the requisite elements to make it an instant metal classic. Disturbed's influences peek through their music, but not in a negative sense; it's clear that Pantera, Metallica and Queensryche were among the artists this band cut their teeth on.
"Intoxication" revisits the vocal style that broke the band with "Down With The Sickness," but vocalist David Draiman puts much more effort into a vocal approach that doesn't rely on gimmicks, especially with the big chorus in "Remember" and the splayed vocal harmonies in "Believe." Making the leap into rock balladry, the album closes on an emotional note with "Darkness." With BELIEVE, Disturbed show themselves to be much more than a one-trick pony; instead they carry the torch for metal in the new millennium.

| | Hub Trucker CD (2002)
Burn The Flags album
$12.69 Trucker is advertised as an amalgam of punk, new wave, metal, funk, and free-form jazz improv. There is a renegade attitude in the music, but no real meeting between these styles. The avant-garde sax/bass/drums trio does cover a wide palette of genres, they only do so on a track-by-track basis. Each tune has its left-field passages, but once "2991" displays its disco vamp sound, it sticks to it. The same thing applies to the trashy "Trucker," the funky "Burn It Down," and the jazzy "Gypsy." The first three pieces of this disc strongly recall Seth Misterka's trio projects from the same year (2002), like The Demon and Dynasty, with their punkish funk, riff-heavy distorted electric bass, and screaming alto sax. While The Hub seem to want Trucker to be a mean, dirty ride, they quickly loose their impetus after the truck takes a trip to the car wash. Dan Magay plays a good saxophone, ...

| | Sinombre Curves Of Sirens CD (2004)
Burn The Flags music CDs
$12.69 "Upliftingly downtrodden and menacingly melancholy, Sinombre strike a fence-sitting pose on their first full-length without ever quite toppling from their perch. Frontwoman Gabriella Marks provides a fragile and alluring beacon for bandmates Andy Slopsema and Matt Rickets to follow with riffs and rhythms, not unlike an introspective seagull skimming dangerously close to the waves. The songs on Curves of Sirens never quite reach escape velocity or contented inertia, but instead reside in the neighborhood of polite agitation and slow, simmering energy brought to a boil.I mention "polite" because at first the trio seem oddly wary of the spotlight, preferring to flirt with momentum rather than calling too much attention to any one aspect of their sound. The guitars squall and writhe throughout the first four tracks without ever really becoming crisp or clear enough to attract undue attention, and the drums click along, reflexively holding the whole enterprise together. Then the tone shifts during the legitimate rock frenzy of the arch and crashing "Swallowtail" and the pressingly propulsive "Birdsong", and suddenly Sinombre feel like a band emerging from their shell mid-album. Even when they close ...
