This ten-track, discount-priced compilation of Liza Minnelli's Columbia Records recordings is not the throwaway you might expect, but rather a must-have for Minnelli fans. The actress/singer spent five years with Columbia, 1972-1977, while the label tried to figure out how to sell her as a recording artist. The search included albums of contemporary music and several one-off singles, and a number of tracks previously lost on out-of-print 45s are to be found here. Minnelli's single recording of "All That Jazz," made to commemorate her brief stint subbing for Gwen Verdon in the musical Chicago in 1975, leads things off, and other rarities include such non-LP B-sides as the caustic "More Than I Like You," co-written by ex-husband Peter Allen, and "My Own Best Friend," written by Minnelli favorites John Kander and Fred Ebb (also the writers of three other songs here). In addition, there are selections drawn from the concert recordings Liza With a "Z" ("God Bless the Child," "Ring Them Bells") and Live at the Winter Garden ("Quiet Thing," "Shine on Harvest Moon") and a couple of surprisingly funky efforts ("I'm Your New Best Friend," "When It Comes Down to It") from Minnelli's final Columbia outing, Tropical Nights. A tribute to pioneering folk-gospel singer and guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe, this collection packs a lot of wallop and joy into its 17 tracks, including fine versions of "Nobody's Fault But Mine" by Joan Osborne and the Holmes Brothers, "This Train" by Janis Ian, and "Didn't It Rain" by Marie Knight, all of which were standard pieces in Tharpe's repertoire. This tribute to the underrated gospel/soul/blues guitar-playing star of the '40s (and later, when she was rediscovered in the '60s) is a labor of love from MC Records label owner Mark Carpentieri and singer Maria Muldaur. It was Carpentieri's concept, but Muldaur -- a huge Tharpe fan -- had the industry connections and clout to recruit some of the marquee names. The disc's title refers not only to Tharpe's song, but to the predominantly all-female cast who cover 17 tracks associated -- but not necessarily written by -- the gospel/soul singer. Production is shared by Muldaur along with Carpentieri, and the classy cast, which includes Rory Block, Tracy Nelson, Odetta, Joan Osborne, Michelle Shocked, and Phoebe Snow -- often singing with each other -- does a terrific job interpreting these tunes. Almost all of the participants have performed spiritual and secular material, so their connection to Tharpe, who was similarly inclined, is obvious. The title of this recording describes it - impromptu - on the spur of the moment. Not even the recording itself was planned. On May 15, 2002 we were on location for a completely different project that was not coming together. Rather than breaking down the equipment to go home, I decided to improvise on some hymns at the piano. So we tried a couple, and then a few more. After listening to them, we decided to return another day to complete a full CD. What you have here is the result of those two evenings.These extemporaneous compositions are not arranged and do not represent multiple takes or edits. As such, they are not perfect, neither do they pose as great art. Were it not for many people who have requested such a recording, particularly at a time when hymns are being forgotten, I would not have considered sharing them. After all, the concept of recording improvisations seems to contradict the very nature of their spontaneity. However, the God of Whom these hymns testify does not change. His mercy, love, and truth are everlasting (Psalm 100).So here, as a pianist, I am reaching back to the hymns of my childhood as well as drawing from the present by including a few of my own contributions to the genre.
