Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel's Deep Song is an intimately atmospheric album that finds the ever-reaching jazz musician in the company of a stellar ensemble. Rosenwinkel has always displayed the strong influences of such expansive players as Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and Pat Martino, and tracks such as the continually overlapping "The Cloister" do nothing if not reinforce such high comparative praise. In fact, Rosenwinkel's moody take on "If I Should Lose You" brings to mind such cerebrally mellow Martino classics as We'll Be Together Again and Cream. Joining him here are the deep-color talents of saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummers Jeff Ballard and Ali Jackson. ~ Matt Collar
Personnel: Kurt Rosenwinkel (vocals, guitar); Joshua Redman (saxophone); Brad Mehldau (piano); Larry Grenadier (bass guitar); Jeff Ballard , Ali Muhammed Jackson (drums).
Down Beat (p.66) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "He explores his romantic side....What hasn't changed from his earlier recordings is the dark, reverbed tone of his guitar and his ability to play with a joyful confidence that is open and inviting." JazzTimes (pp.128-129) - "Mehldau's poise and focused power on difficult, unfamiliar musical forms is stunning. Redman is a clarion, passionate, fully integrated force. Rosenwinkel's guitars is both the most prominent, penetrating presence and the provocative, densely detailed background..." Much Unheralded Musician How can Kurt get the most innovative musicians? It's all about the music which is very unconventional, but not avante-gard. Reflective, meditative and beyond words. Thank you for this fine effort. Submitted by tatouage (Spring Valley, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The music plays Kurt. This is yet, another wonderful album from a brilliant writer and guitarist who really is carving out his own niche in the very formula-ized world of the modern music biz. Check Kurt out. He is unique, and as the headline indicates, during an "on" project (such as this one), or live performance. Kurt does seem to "get out of the way" and let the music play him. How many artists is that true of? Submitted by John (Long Island, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Deep Song album
$6.19 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, ...
| | Pat Metheny Way Up CD (2005)
Deep Song CD music
$15.65 Guitarist Pat Metheny has been working with long song forms since his career began in the 1970s. However, his 2005 release, THE WAY UP, takes the extended form to the next level. One composition split into four sections, this album just may be Metheny's most ambitious work to date.
Collaborating with longtime associates Lyle Mays (keyboards), Steve Rodby (bass), and a host of newer PMG members, Metheny embarks on a 68-minute ...
| | Paul Motian I Have The Room Above Her CD (2005)
Deep Song music CDs
$14.15 To put drummer Paul Motian, guitarist Bill Frisell, and saxophonist Joe Lovano in a room together is to court majesty and genius; even if the three were playing hackneyed standards half-asleep, the results would likely be brilliant. I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER is filled with the kind of technical mastery and scintillating chemistry one would expect from a trio this accomplished and advanced. Frisell's electric guitar spins choral color and spiraling, reverbed embellishments. Lovano's tenor is full-toned, and he plays with tremendous sensitivity ...
| | Dave Holland Overtime CD (2005)
Deep Song songs
$13.49 This exceptional date by Dave Holland Big Band was recorded in 2002 in New York, yet remained unreleased until 2005. As is to be expected, Holland assembled a fine cast of seasoned and young players, some of whom are veterans of Holland's quintets and quartets. These are four saxophones -- two alto, tenor and baritone -- three trumpets and trombones, and vibes as well as bass and drums. They include Chris Potter and Robin and Duane Eubanks, Antonio Hart, Steve Nelson, Josh Roseman, Billy Kilson, Taylor Haskins, Gary Smulyan, Jonathan Arons and Alex Sipiagin. The music centers around the opening four-part "Monterey Suite," a tour de force commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival and originally performed there in 2001. Holland's writing for the trombone section is dynamite. Roseman, ...

| | Dennis Alcapone Gun's Don't Argue: The Anthology '70-'77 CDs (1995) Remastered
Deep Song music CDs
$14.49 In addition to his fine skills on the mic, Alcapone also had a knack for choosing top-notch producers, and GUNS DON'T ARGUE follows his work with such control-booth luminaries as Keith Hudson, Bunny Lee, Niney Holeness, Duke Reid, and Lee Perry. Over backing tracks that range from rocksteady to ska to American R&B to deep dub, Alcapone lays down drone-chants ("Shades of Hudson"), dance instructions ("Ball of Confusion"), and Rastafarian ...
